The trial proceeded in the absence of Jacques Chirac.
Jacques Chirac, 79, was the first president to be sentenced in misdemeanor. The case alleged fictitious employment since the early 90s, when he was mayor of Paris. Protected during his seven and five-year term by presidential immunity, Jacques Chirac was caught by the old record when he left the Elysee Palace in 2007.
