The Americans retiring to Mexico for a more affordable life: 'We are immigrants'
There's been much ado about northbound migration across the Mexico-US border - but some are moving in the other direction.
A scenic Rosarito, Baja California beach in Mexico full of tourists on Monday, March 25, 2024. The beach is a go-to destination for locals and Americans living near the beach, as live music is played and lounging while being served Mexican snacks is a usual pass time in the small beach city.

Renee Varnadore, enjoys buying flowers often at local flower shops which make her feel part of the community and beautify her day while she shops around and does errands with her husband Jym in Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico on Monday, March 25, 2024. Renee has made it a priority to buy local products while living in the beach city, learning Spanish and engaging with the people who live outside their beach condo area, steps away from the Pacific Ocean.

Renee and Jym Varnadore, along with their cat, Paz; Peace in Spanish, share a moment while looking out their condo’s balcony where they can see the Pacific Ocean. Jym, a former pre-construction expert designed steps so he and his wife could see without much distortion the beachfront they walk and enjoy in their retirement in Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico on Monday, March 25, 2024. The Varnadores have been living in their current condo for three years now and living in the small beach city for six years after moving from San Diego. The couple left the United States in search of a quality of life that’s no longer in reach for them stateside. And now, the clear blue waters of Rosarito Beach are quickly becoming home to them.

Homes, condos and Airbnb rentals occupy a part of Rosarito’s privately owned areas where mostly foreigners from the United States, Canada and Europe live in quiet neighborhoods where Jym and Renee Varnadore take their walks on Monday, March 25, 2024. Those that can afford the luxury condos in the small beach city are in search of a quality of life that’s no longer in reach for them in their home countries.

Billboards and signs advertising beachfront properties and luxury condos both in English and Spanish are just an example of the small beach city of Rosarito’s changing landscape as rows of luxury condos that are either occupied, being built or sold to foreigners from the United States, Canada and Europe who want to live in Mexico on Monday, March 25, 2024. In addition to that privacy, those on board will live in the lap of luxury. The Somnio is 222 metres long in length with a gross tonnage of 33,500 GT .The team behind it say it is an unprecedented feat of design and engineering is set to change the course of ultra-luxury travel forever. The yacht was a collaboration between two of the world’s most esteemed design and architectural studios, Winch Design in the UK and Tillberg Design in Sweden. The build, which is expected to cost around $600 million USD , will be carried out by Norwegian yard Vard .Somnio is the idea of co-founder is Captain Erik Bredhe. He previously helmed The World, another residential vessel. He says whereas that was a cruise liner on permanent tour around the world for wealthy clientele, Somnio will better mirror the intimacy of a private yacht.
