Body Worlds 4 exhibition. Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. Manchester, Britain - 21 Feb 2008
The Body Worlds 4 exhibition has been unveiled at Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. The exhibition features the work of German anatomist Gunther von Hagens, who preserves and displays human bodies - posed in a range of athletic poses - using a technique called plastination, a process which reveals inner anatomical structures. The aim of the exhibition is to educate the 'laymen' about the human body, leading to better health awareness. As well as 20 full body 'plastinates, the exhibit also features 200 body parts, some with medical conditions such as the lungs of a smoker and non-smoker placed side by side. All of the human plastinates on display were willing donors to the exhibit, and visitors are also being encourage to donate their organs to the NHS. However, the show has caused controversy with the Bishop of Manchester calling it a `little shop of horrors'.
