Soviet breakaway republic of Transnistria, Moldova, Europe - Feb 2013
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Amos Chapple / Rex Features (2148301y)
The Soviet Time-Slip Territory Of Transnistria
Located on a sliver of land running along the eastern border of Moldova, the self declared independent country of Transnistria clings to its Soviet roots.
Located on the border of the Ukraine, Transnistria has its own government, parliament, military, police and postal system, but remains unrecognised internationally.
And this time-slip territory maintains a Soviet feel that has been described as "surreal", with even the flag sporting the hammer and sickle emblem of Communism.
As the Soviet Union began to fragment in the late 1980s Moldova effectively had independence thrust upon it.
A growing sense of nationalism saw a number of new laws proposed, including a move towards making Moldovan the nation's only official language.
For many in the east of the country this was seen as the beginning of a process that would eventually exclude Russian speakers from public life.
So in September 1990 the region of Transnistria proclaimed its secession from Moldova.
Two months later, when Moldovan police attempted to forcibly remove new checkpoints to the region, a civil war was ignited.
Lasting for two years, this conflict cost the lives of approximately 700 fighters and civilians.
It was concluded by a ceasefire in July 1992 and although this tense truce remains in place today Transnistria's political status remains unresolved.
Though it has all the trappings of an independent nation it isn't officially recognised by any other sovereign nation - not even Russia - and to all intents and purposes is still considered to be part of Moldova.
Today, there is a heavy Russian military presence in Transnistria - an agreement made as part of the ceasefire - and Soviet soldiers remain a highly visible presence.

Life in Iran
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Amos Chapple / Rex Features (2206110f)
Life In Iran
Think of Iran and certain words may spring to mind: 'secretive', 'oppressive', 'evil'.
However, beyond the headlines and the politics, dig a little deeper and a very different Iran emerges.
It is a country where a large proportion of the population is under 35, partly thanks to a call by Ayatollah Khomeini to create 'armies for Islam'.
Ironically, the country's youth is now considered to be one of the biggest dangers, with many deeply unhappy with the current regime.
And, rather than despise America and the West, this group of post-revolution young adults do not prescribe to the anti-American propaganda that is often spouted.
As its President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad can often be seen as the 'face' of Iran and his hardline views considered to be the feelings of the majority.
Meanwhile, George W Bush's 2002 comments that Iran was part of an "axis of evil" has further coloured outside views of the country.
In reality Iran is a lot friendlier - and a lot more complicated - a country than you might first have thought.

Halden Fengsel prison, Halden, Norway - May 2010
FULL WORDS: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/cfg7
According to The Telegraph, Norway killer Anders Behring Breivik could be held in the 'luxury' Halden Fengsel prison.
Built at a cost of $252million over ten years, Halden Fengsel is a world away from the bleak and overcrowded jails of other countries.
The rooms are spacious, modern and are equipped with flat-screen TVs and minifridges. There is a spotless gym, climbing wall and wooded jogging trails for the residents to get some exercise.
In fact, nestled in 75 acres of a picturesque forest in southeastern Norway, one could mistake this for a trendy hotel - but it is in fact the country's newest prison.
Opened in April 2010 to house 248 inmates, the nation's second largest prison has been constructed based on the principle that "correctional services shall provide that the offender should be able to make a personal effort to change his pattern of criminal action".

The speaking walls of Belfast
January 3, 2011, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom: Murals represent the political views, memorials for those lost in the battle between Catholics and Protestants in the age old battle for Northern Ireland on both the Catholic and Protestant sides of West Belfast and other politically related scenes from Belfast. A wall divides Catholic and Protestant West Belfast much like the Berlin wall once divided East and West Berlin. There are gates in between which are opened and closed depending on the political climate. Something as simple as a soccer game between a predominantly Catholic city and a predominant Protestant city is reason enough to close the gates. This mural depicts the Easter Rising of 1916 in which was mounted by Irish republicans with the aims of ending British rule in Ireland and establishing the Irish Republic. It was the most significant uprising in Ireland since the rebellion of 1798. The Rising was suppressed after seven days of fighting, and its leaders were court martialed and executed, but it succeeded in bringing the physical force of Irish Republicanism back to the forefront of Irish politics. ///Mural on the Catholic side of West Belfast depicting The Usual Suspects claiming that there was a collusion and cover ups made by the State giving Unionist terrorist organizations a free pass while coming down hard on the Republicans.. The black Taxis were historically a response by Belfast Republicans (Catholics) to deteriorating public transport in their areas. They were also the vehicle of choice for republican terrorist bombs. This is one of the murals on the Catholic side. It depicts Bobby Sands, a member of the IRA who was imprisoned in the infamous H block of the Maze prison. While in prison he ran and was elected to a seat in the British Parliament. Then he started the hunger strikes of the early 1980s and died from it..
