NEWS - NASA zeigt Rückgang des Wasserstands im Lake Mead über 20 Jahre, Arizona, USA
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Shutterstock (13051635c)
The detailed images below include a view from Landsat 8 taken on July 8, 2021 (middle). The light-colored fringes along the shorelines of Lake Mead in 2021 and 2022 are mineralized areas of the lakeshore that were formerly underwater when the reservoir was filled closer to capacity. The phenomenon is often referred to as a "bathtub ring." As of July 18, 2022, Lake Mead was filled to just 27 percent of capacity. The largest reservoir in the United States supplies water to millions of people across seven states, tribal lands, and northern Mexico. It now also provides a stark illustration of climate change and a long-term drought that may be the worst in the U.S. West in 12 centuries.

RAF Conducts First Air Strikes of Iraq Mission - 30 Sep 2014
Royal Air Force Tornado GR4 aircraft have been in action over Iraq today as part of the international coalition's operations to support the democratic Iraqi Government in the fight against ISIL.
In the course of an armed reconnaissance mission from RAF Akrotiri, two Tornados were tasked to assist Kurdish troops in north-west Iraq who were under attack from ISIL terrorists.
On arriving overhead, the RAF patrol, using their Litening III targeting pod, identified an ISIL heavy weapon position which was engaging Kurdish ground forces. One Paveway IV guided bomb was used to attack the ISIL position. Following this engagement, the patrol identified an ISIL armed pick-up truck in the same area and conducted an attack on the vehicle using a Brimstone missile. An initial assessment indicates that both precision strikes were successful.

Soviet breakaway republic of Transnistria, Moldova, Europe - Feb 2013
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Amos Chapple / Rex Features (2148301u)
The Soviet Time-Slip Territory Of Transnistria
Located on a sliver of land running along the eastern border of Moldova, the self declared independent country of Transnistria clings to its Soviet roots.
Located on the border of the Ukraine, Transnistria has its own government, parliament, military, police and postal system, but remains unrecognised internationally.
And this time-slip territory maintains a Soviet feel that has been described as "surreal", with even the flag sporting the hammer and sickle emblem of Communism.
As the Soviet Union began to fragment in the late 1980s Moldova effectively had independence thrust upon it.
A growing sense of nationalism saw a number of new laws proposed, including a move towards making Moldovan the nation's only official language.
For many in the east of the country this was seen as the beginning of a process that would eventually exclude Russian speakers from public life.
So in September 1990 the region of Transnistria proclaimed its secession from Moldova.
Two months later, when Moldovan police attempted to forcibly remove new checkpoints to the region, a civil war was ignited.
Lasting for two years, this conflict cost the lives of approximately 700 fighters and civilians.
It was concluded by a ceasefire in July 1992 and although this tense truce remains in place today Transnistria's political status remains unresolved.
Though it has all the trappings of an independent nation it isn't officially recognised by any other sovereign nation - not even Russia - and to all intents and purposes is still considered to be part of Moldova.
Today, there is a heavy Russian military presence in Transnistria - an agreement made as part of the ceasefire - and Soviet soldiers remain a highly visible presence.
Visitors to Transnistria coming from Moldova mu...

EXCLUSIVE: The Human Cost Of An Olympic Gold
For the elite athletes of the world it's a moment to dream of - standing on the podium to be crowned an Olympic champion. In all, 4,700 medals will be draped around the necks of competitors when the greatest show on Earth arrives in Britain next year. Yet, as the clock ticks down to London 2012 an investigation uncovers the human price people say they are paying for those precious medals.
By Richard Jones in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia
Children strain as they nudge their carts loaded with water for half a mile through the bitter cold across dirty sand to their traditional tent homes.
The long trek is something that the villagers of Hanbogd have gotten used too as six wells have dwindled to one in this south Gobi desert town.
"The water shortage is because of the mining," says Tsevegmid, a 72-year-old wrinkled nomad standing outside her tent home. "We used to be able to dig down a few meters and water hundreds of sheep now there's only enough water for fifty."
Mongolia is one of the earth's last great wildernesses; bitterly freezing in winter, boiling in summer. Three times the size of France with a population of just 2.6 million and an abundance of natural resources.
Hanbogd, is the closest town to the Oyu Tolgoi, the world's fifth largest mine with an estimated GBP 221 billion of gold, silver and copper, being developed by Canadian company Ivanhoe with Anglo-Australian company Rio Tinto.
The job of providing metal for the Olympic medals was awarded to Rio Tinto who are also sponsoring the Mongolian Olympic team.
But here in the Gobi the Olympics are likely to pass unnoticed amid the daily battle for survival. Families live in 'gers' - tents made from sheep-wool felt. Their only heating is one central cooking stove. Computers are a rarity and the internet non...
