THE GOLDEN CHARIOT - KARNATAKA'S LUXURY TRAIN

Visitors to Southern India can enjoy a luxurious voyage of discovery thanks to a veritable 'palace on wheels' - the Golden Chariot.

This five-star train transports tourists between sites of cultural and historic interest throughout the Indian state of Karnataka.

While the neighbouring states of Kerala and Goa are firmly established on the tourist trail, Karnataka is only just entering the mass consciousness of international travellers.

With poor roads, no real air access and only limited hotels the state has remained largely untouched.

However, the Golden Chariot is now opening up this area and revealing its many wonders, all of which are encapsulated under the region's "One State, Many Worlds" slogan.

And the concept of exploring India's heritage sites from the opulent surroundings of a train that comes complete with its very own spa is proving increasingly popular.

The Golden Chariot's journey begins in Bangalore's Yeshwanthpur railway station before it embarks on a seven day tour that winds its way through Karnataka, stopping at some of its impressive heritage sites, and eventually finishing in Goa.

Those who embark on this journey can enjoy a host of luxuries that are packed into the eighteen coaches that form the Golden Chariot.

Eleven of these carriages are given over to sleeping quarters named after the dynasties - such as Rashtrakuta, Vijayanagara and Chalukya - which formerly ruled over territories in Karnataka.

Each of the carriages, which cost around $350 per night for double occupancy, have a full-time coach attendant who provides an attentive, butler-like service.

The decor of each cabin draws its inspiration from Karnataka's...

SUDAN TO CONSIDER JAPAN'S OFFER OF TROOPS

Speaking at a press conference in Tokyo today (30th May) Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has said that he will consider Japan's offer to send troops to his country for a non-combat mission.

Earlier this month Japan pledged to extend $200 million in aid for Sudan in the next four years.

Tokyo is also eager to take part in U.N. operations in Sudan in the hope that it will help back up its long running ambition to gain a seat on the U.N. Security Council.

However, Japan's pacifist constitution restricts its participation in military activities overseas and forbids the use of force to settle international disputes.

As a seeming compromise Japan had told Sudan that it wants to send its troops to Sudan to help to help with construction and humanitarian activities in the African nation.

One of the proposed plans is for the dispatch of several hundred soldiers to southern Sudan on a non-combat mission.

These troops, said Al-Bashir, would not take part in U.N.-led peace-keeping operations, nor would they be deployed to the conflict-ridden Darfur region.

In response to the offer President Al-Bashir told reporters in Tokyo, "We are going to study this offer."

The Sudanese president is in Japan to attend a three-day Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).

During his visit he also encouraged Japanese companies to invest in Sudan, commenting: "We have a very stable economy".

Black Crack - The Scourge Of Tehran
BLACK CRACK - THE SCOURGE OF TEHRAN

Far from the eyes of the Western press and its views on Iranian politics and religious ideologies, lie the forgotten, the unwanted and the wretched - the hordes of Tehran's drug addicts.

While our general belief of Iran being a strict Muslim state may be more or less correct, many of us may not realise that it has a very liberal and enlightened approach to tackling its people's drug problems.

However, maybe this is more out of necessity than choice: Iran has the largest heroin problem in the entire world and a ballooning rate of Aids cases on the back of it.

Exacerbating this problem is the nature of the drug that most of these scores of thousands of addicts are hooked on: compressed, crystallised heroin - aka black crack.

Most people associate the slang word 'crack' with cocaine, but in fact it simply refers to the crystal form of a drug and the noise made when heated.

In this case 'black crack' is something of a misnomer, as it is in fact white heroin, compressed and considerably purer, stronger and hence even more dangerous than brown heroin.

Its manufacture process entails heroin being added to water which is boiled, then distilled to purify the drug by passing it through a pipe to lose its heat. The end product, with a little help from sodium bicarbonate and other various pills and chemicals, should be the crystal, or 'crack', form of the drug.

Obviously the purity of the crack depends on the purity of the heroin used, a grade that can often be judged by the colour of the original heroin - usually somewhere between a cream and white colour, the darker the heroin, the more impurities it has.

Such is the strength and resultant dange...
