Caught doing the bear-laro? These two grizzlies looked as if they were warming up for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Photographer Rick Sheremeta caught the brown bears squaring up to each other at the Mcneil River Game Sanctuary on the Alaska Peninsula.

But they weren't practicing the waltz, in fact the heavyweights were locked in a serious show of strength.

Rick explains: "The McNeil River is home to the largest concentration of brown bears in the world thanks to the abundance of salmon at the waterfall. But with so many bears there it's inevitable that there will be battles for territory.

"They will usually have a face-off until one backs off submissively. It is quite a sight to behold and could almost be viewed as a strange sort of dance.

"These two youngsters reared up at each other but it didn't look as if it would end up with either getting hurt. It may have even been practice fighting as the tussle was soon over."

These insects looked like an acrobatic display team as they performed a series of daring highwire stunts - on a twig. The performance started with one praying mantis clambering onto its partner's back and being lifted above her head. Photographer Arif Avize watched as the mantis then balanced on one leg and shuffled gently to remain balanced. The 38-year-old said: "I found these two female praying mantises while out for a walk. "They were having a dual but seemed to be doing acrobatics." Arif, who took the photos in his home town of Kahramanmaras, Turkey, added: "They are very photogenic and move like humans."

    Out Of The Blue
These swimmers look like they have been playing with radioactive paint as they glow a fluorescent shade of blue.

Photographer Phil Hart, 34, snapped the bizarre sight as his friends emerged from a lake in the dark of night.

The light is created by a chemical reaction called "bioluminescence", which happens when a naturally occurring micro-organism in the water is disturbed.

Phil put his camera on a very slow shutter speed and threw sand and stones into the water to cause the reaction and capture as much of the blue haze as possible.

The resulting images are particularly stunning due to the high concentration of the micro-organism 'Noctiluca Scintillans' at that time in the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, Australia.

Phil said: "To be there watching this bioluminescence is spellbinding and to see it like this is very rare.

"I am a program director with an organisation that has been running canoeing camps on the Gippsland Lakes for fifty years.

"Nobody can remember a time when the bioluminescence was as bright as it was on this occasion.

"The sequence of bushfires and floods which brought such high levels of nutrients into the lakes for these organisms to feed on may not happen again in my lifetime.

"I feel very fortunate to have been there to see it and to have had my camera gear there to record it."

Phil, from Melbourne, Australia, added: "While the luminescence was obvious to the eye, the bright blue colour is only apparent in photos with the camera.

"When the first photo I took appeared on screen I could hardly believe it - the people in the water looked freakish.

"It was like we were playing with radioactive paint.

"We stayed up late on several nights and never got tired of playing in the water and taking photos."

    The Bear-room Waltz
These playful bear cubs gained top marks when they performed their very own ballroom dancing routine.

The cute pair of youngsters stood up on their hind legs and waltzed their way around a wildlife park.

The baby brown bears were snapped by amateur photographer Kristi Harper, 41, at the Bear Country Park in South Dakota.

Kristi, from New Mexico, said: "At the park you can drive through in your car and have grown bears and other wildlife all around your car.

"The baby bears were in a separated play area with lots of other young bears.

"I was lucky enough to see the baby bears playing, dancing and climbing trees together.

    "It was an incredible sight."

At birth, bear cubs are blind, toothless, hairless, and weigh less than 450g.

They feed on their mother's milk until they are strong enough to follow her and find their own solid food.

Cubs remain with their mother for two to four years, during which time they learn survival techniques, how to hunt, fish, and defend themselves.

Adult male bears often kill the cubs of another bear either to make a female sexually aroused or simply to eat.

Library assistant Elke Terstegen, 38, photographed the playful scene at her local zoo. She said: "The photo isn't as romantic as it looks - it is actually a mother and her child. "It was a kind of 'Oh, you have something in your face - let me take my handkerchief, spit on it and rub it away'. "We all know that behaviour from our own mum".

Baby Squirrels Are Nuts About Each Other
These adorable baby red squirrels seem to be sharing a kiss while hiding in a tree.

The cute animals gave each other an affectionate peck while on a branch five metres high up a fur tree.

The intimate moment was captured by part-time photographer Sergey Bezberdy after he stumbled across a mother and her five babies.

Sergey had been taking photos in a park when some movement in a tree caught his eye.

The 33-year-old wandered up to the tree and found the squirrels larking about while their mother was on a branch below.

Sergey, from Minsk, Belarus, took the photos in the city's Gorky Park.

He said: "I noticed some movement inside the fur-tree about 15 metres from me so I went closer to get a better look.

"I was shocked when I peered in and saw the squirrels running about on the branch, at about head height.

"They felt absolutely comfortable about my presence and were not frightened at all.

"Of course I was excited, we have a quite a lot of red squirrels in this park but I have never seen little ones before and so close.

"There were five little ones, with their mother below, and they were playing just like little kids.

"They were so close and unfortunately I didn't have quite the right lens but there was no time to change it. They let me stay quite long and I got some good shots.

"After about ten minutes quite a crowd had gathered and parents were showing them to their children. Then the squirrels scampered off.

"Over the next two weeks I went back to the tree five or six times armed with almonds but sadly they were nowhere to be found.

"I guess it really was a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Jesus has cropped up alongside a motorway in Berkshire.

Two crop circles depicting the face of the Messiah have appeared on either side of the M4 near Hungerford.

The two images, both 250 feet in diameter, were formed in crops of wheat.

The almost identical circles seem to portray Jesus in similar fashion to the world famous Shroud of Turin.

The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth which many believe was the cloth used to cover Christ at the time of his burial.

As such, the imprint of a face that can be seen on the shroud is believed to be the face of Jesus himself.

Crop circle expert Karen Alexander commented: "These circles are causing quite a stir in the crop circle community.

"The last time a face appeared as a crop circle was in 2002 when an alien face appeared at Sparsholt in Hampshire.

"The farmers whose land has been used to make the circles are worried that they will be inundated with visitors seeking a religious experience".

Two eagles in flight appear as if one four-winged flying creature
    Four-Winged Eagle Is a Million-to-One Shot
    FOUR-WINGED EAGLE IS A MILLION-TO-ONE SHOT

A wildlife photographer has managed to capture a four-winged bald eagle.

But rather than an early April fool, the stunning image is actually a million-to-one shot of two majestic birds in flight.

Christopher Dodds spent 'countless hours' at Kachemak Bay in Alaska trying to get a picture of the eagles interacting.

His patience was rewarded when a pair of birds - which can have a wingspan of up to 2.44 m (96 in) - had an impressive mid-air tussle. But with the dramatic coming together over in a blink of an eye there was only a split-second to chance to capture the scene.

And Chris says that his amazing picture goes against all the rules of photographing eagles.

"It's generally a good idea to photograph birds either in-flight, or perched, with the wind and light coming from your back," he explains. "It's often said that an image of a bird without the face or an eye visible is a failure.

"I was simply making the most of a bad situation; the wind was blowing against the afternoon sunlight and all of the other photographers had opted to take the afternoon off to rest or edit their images.

"I watched and saw that I might have a chance at something artsy, or abstract, to salvage the afternoon. While it's generally a good idea to include your subject's face, or eyes (preferably with good eye contact); once in a very great while you can create something nice without including either.

"There's no way to tell if the two Eagles in the image are male or female, though I suspect it's a female on top and it's a smaller male on the bottom. Adult eagles look alike, but the female is larger than the male...

Artisanal gold mine in Tonoir, southern Burkina Faso, West Africa - 2009
    GOLD MINING IN BURKINO FASO

With international demand for gold having risen over the past year, this has seen a new explosion of artisanal (small-scale) mining taking place in the impoverished West African nation of Burkino Faso.

With a high number of people in the country, which sits between Ghana and Mali, struggling to get by gold mining is seen as a vital lifeline to many.

The gold mine at Tonoir is just one that has seemingly sprung up overnight as thousands of workers and their families join the gold rush.

With its haphazard and dangerous construction Tonoir is now home to an estimated 50,000 people.

The 'mine' is made up of numerous different shafts; some extend 20m under the surface, propped up with tree branches, as part of an elaborate tunnel system.

Each day workers descend into these shafts for up to four hours at a time, using primitive tools to hack out large rocks that are then hauled to the surface.

These rocks are broken down and then filtered through water troughs in order to obtain the tiny specs of gold.

Mercury is added to bind the gold together and the results are shipped off to be sold in markets in the capital city or further a field in Ghana or the Ivory Coast.

Generally, the same person owns all the mining sites in one region, with a licence to mine being granted by local authorities.

With no centralised control, conditions in the mines can vary widely, with little regulation and no real safety precautions making them a dangerous place for the miners and their families.

There is little or no protective clothing, either down the mine shaft, where chocking dust rules, or above ground where the mercury that is added to the gold can have harmful side effects.

    Dynamite is also regular...

The Queen is patron of the gathering, which takes place in the picturesque village of Braemar on the first Saturday in September. The event coincides with the Queen's annual two-month holiday at nearby Balmoral Castle. The royal family joined an estimated 16,000 people to watch the traditional Scottish games on offer, which date back to the 11th century. From their pavilion, the Queen, the Duke and the Prince watched various events, including caber-tossing, hammer throwing, Highland dancing and tug of war
