Connecting Thin Black Lines 1985 - 2025. The thrilling show by Black and Asian women that rocked the art world.
We thought we were being naughty!’ The thrilling show by Black and Asian women that rocked the art world.
In 1985, a groundbreaking show curated by Lubaina Himid tore down barriers - and appalled critics. As a new exhibition revisits that pivotal moment, the artists remember the prejudice they faced - and what they have achieved since
Lubaina Himid.
This summer, the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London will present Connecting Thin Black Lines 1985 - 2025, a major group exhibition and event programme curated by Lubaina Himid, the Turner Prize winning artist who will represent Great Britain at the 2026 Venice Biennale.
Celebrating 40 years since The Thin Black Line, the groundbreaking group show of young Black and Asian women artists curated by Himid at the ICA in 1985, the exhibition will present work by the original artists Brenda Agard, Sutapa Biswas, Sonia Boyce, Chila Kumari Burman, Jennifer Comrie, Himid, Claudette Johnson, Ingrid Pollard, Veronica Ryan, Marlene Smith and Maud Sulter all together for
the first time.

Artist HENRI PRIVAT LIVEMONT: Poster Absinthe Robette 1896
1896: ABSINTHE ROBETTE, Art Nouveau's Green Fairy legendary poster is 42.75 h x 31.5 w in (109 x 80 cm) commissioned to advertise Belgian distillery Robette Absinthe, a popular alcoholic beverage at the turn of the century. Features a classically styled woman in a sheer gown holding a glass of absinthe. Every element of the image is lavishly decorative yet delicately organic. Holding up her glass with the reverence of a holy relic, we do not see the hand that pours the water over the sugar, adding a mystical, otherworldly quality to the concoction. The background is made up of sensual plumes of mint on green that echo the milky swirl within the cup. A sugar cube on top of the glass is being poured over with water, creating a magical effect. Known for its green background, which alludes to absinthe's color, and its decorative elements like the wormwood in the left border. One of the most iconic posters of all time, perfectly captures the spirit of Art Nouveau. Created by Belgian poster master artist Henri Privat-Livemont (1861-1936), known for his La Belle Époque period (1871-1914) posters and lithographs.
