Dog adopts nine ducklings, Mountfitchet Castle, Essex, UK - 21 May 2018
A DOG has become "dad" to nine baby birds at Mountfitchet Castle, a tourist attraction near Stansted Airport in Essex.
Fred, a 10-year-old Labrador has adopted the little ducklings after they were orphaned and staff found them waddling around the grounds alone.
He stepped in to help after they were abandoned last Thursday and they have been following him around ever since as if he is their mother.
The ducklings sleep in the basket with Fred and have even hitched a ride on his back and followed him into the water for a swim in the castle moat.
A spokeswoman for the castle said: "The team were very worried about the ducklings but Fred, a 10-year-old Labrador, immediately took to them and has been babysitting ever since.

A grossly overweight gang member may be restricted to a prison diet after being arrested for trying to kidnap a 10-year-old boy.
California man Victor Joseph Espinoza may have gotten away with his alleged plot to abduct a boy on his way to soccer practice but was too heavy to make his escape over a backyard fence.
The 55-year-old weighs 425 pounds, the equivalent of a fully-grown lion and is now being held on charges of false imprisonment, child annoyance and gang enhancements.
Santa Ana police received a call at the end of last week stating that a soccer coach was trying, unsuccessfully, to detain the male suspect.
Police say the unidentified would-be victim was walking to soccer practice with his 19-year-old female cousin when they came across Espinoza who lured the victim close enough to grab him.

10-year-old girl gets sunburned after school refuses to apply sun cream on her in Swansea, Wales, Britain - 12 Jul 2011
A 10-year-old has been left badly sunburnt after her school banned children from brining in sun cream. Aimee Bowen's skin turned bright red and blistered after she spent the afternoon outside during a sports day practice at Pennard Primary School, near Swansea, South Wales. Her parents had applied sun cream before she left for school in the morning but the youngster was not allowed to take the bottle with her so that it could be re-applied. Andrew and Victoria Bowen had previously raised the issue of sun cream with the school but were told pupils were not allowed to bring it in just in case any children had an allergic reaction. Mrs Bowen said: "I can understand the situation where teachers cannot apply sun cream to children but for a child not be able to bring their own in when they are ten years old seems to me to be totally ludicrous". According to head teacher Sharon Freeguard the school follows official sun safety guidelines, which were issued in 2006.
