January 8, 2017 - Tucson, Arizona, United States: The Society for Creative Anachronism holds practice for a major medieval battle to be held next month in Tucson. Members practice fighting skills in full armor at a downtown local park. The SCA is an international living history group that studies and recreates medieval cultures and history before the 16th century. It was founded in 1966 out of UC Berkeley and has over 60,000 members worldwide. The Grand Tournament to be held in Arizona in February features participants in period dress wearing helmets and armor fighting in an epic battle using padded swords, maces, axes, and fencing foils. Chapters continue to grow establishing new Kingdoms all originating from the original West, East and Middle Kingdoms. In addition to fighting skills, members study medieval arts and sciences, dance, theater, arts and crafts. Other activities include equestrian events, archery and calligraphy. The SCA sponsors Renaissance fairs as well as War games where many Kingdoms come together to fight epic battles with huge armies competing for supremacy.
