Elephant Society is 'Still Disrupted'
African elephants' decision-making abilities are left impaired by culling operations that ended decades ago, University of Sussex research suggests.
A study found that elephant herds that lost adults to culls during the 1970s and 1980s were less able to respond appropriately to other elephant calls.
Lead researcher Prof Karen McComb said the animals' "social understanding" had been impaired by the loss of adults.
The results are published in the journal Frontiers in Zoology. (FOTO: DUKAS/LFI/Photoshot)

The 'Tailly'
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Geoffrey Robinson / Rex Features (2049049e)
Human 'Tail' That Wags When You're Happy
A man has invented a tail for humans, which wags when you are happy.
Shota Ishiwatari has developed the unusual fluffy tail, which links to the user's heart rate and wags faster if they get excited.
He hopes the cute tail, which is attached to a belt with sensors on the inside to measure the user's heart rate, will soon be on sale in the UK.
The tail normally hangs down, but when the user gets excited and their heart rate increases, it starts wagging. As the person's heart rate returns to normal the tail slows down.
Shota said: "Tailly is fun to wear to parties, while out with friends or playing with kids. You could even wear Tailly on a date and express your true feelings through the wagging tail".
"Even better, your partner could also wear one for the both of you to add a level of subconscious communication between the two of you."
Shota hopes the tail, which comes in black, white, grey and golden brown, will become a popular fashion accessory.

Has Fashion Gone Mad? Life-sized Animal Tails For Humans
Having a tail is not just for cats and dogs these days; a UK company has designed life-size animal tails especially for humans.
TellTails, based in Hackney, creates life-size tails of various animals, from squirrels to leopards to lemurs designed to fit comfortably to the human body with a thick elastic waistband.
According to TellTails the feral extensions are not just to wear on Halloween but all year round as they intend to 'undo nature's greatest mistake' and 'believe that everyone has a tail in them just waiting to be wagged, a residual longing not quite expelled from the evolutionary process.'
On their website they have even suggested a TellTail may help in finding a soulmate: "An appendage which protrudes from the posterior or is prolonged beyond the rest of the body. Related to radical frivolity and acts of spontaneity. Increases rhythmic movement and catalyses courtship."
Ranging in price from GBP 20-GBP 35 TellTails are available to buy online from Kigu.
