'Great Lion Show', 1868. Sir Robert Napier is shown standing on the right of this cartoon. He had recently fought a victorious campaign in Abyssinia against King Theodore which had resulted in the British captives held by the King being freed. The decisive battle had been fought at Magdala and, upon his return home, Sir Robert was created Lord Napier of Magdala and given a pension of two thousand pounds per annum. The one shilling must be a reference to those in the army often being said to have taken the 'Queen's shilling' when they joined up. From "Punch, or the London Charivari", July 18, 1868. Having the best views of the French seas, close proximity to Monte Carlo, 10 acres of grounds cascading down to the resort of Villefranche on the French Riviera and a price tag of $500 million, La Leopolda sets the world record for the most expensive house. It was originally built for Belgium's King Leopold's mistresses, and past owners include the late banking magnate Edmund Safra, Microsoft's Bill Gates and Fiat tycoon Gianni Agnelli. Recent rumors said it's just been bought by one of the world's richest men, billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich. Villefranche sur Mer, FRANCE-11/07/2008

A working man's canary for Queen Mary : breeding the birds in Norwich
Storing eggs until birds are ready to sit upon them : placing an egg ina division of a special, numbered drawer
It was arranged that the town of Norwich should present a Norwich canary to the Queen on her birthday this year and a committee of experts has been at work selecting the ideal bird. The stipulations were that the canary should come from the home of a Norwich working-man , and that it should be a typical Norwich plain-head , either of the " clear-yellow" variety or " ticked" that is to say a yellow bird delicately marked. It should be noted that hundreds of workmen in Norwich , the majority of them shoemakers , breed the Norwich canary to their considerable profit .
