Boys will be Girls / AT THE BAR
The oldest established all male revue ’This Was The Army’, running for nine years, ever since WWII. The idea was started by comedian Jack Lewis while in the Army where entertainment was improvised, when men made fun of, and made up for the shortage of women by dressing up and pretending to behave as women. Back in civvy street he set out with his wife Hazel to turn the joke into a commercial proposition. Jack provided the raw knockout Army sketches and Hazel (a former dancer) trained the chorus ‘girls’. The original cast has since broken up, apart from Sonnie Dawkes, the 30 year old ‘female’ lead. The popularity of the show has not diminished and audiences are treated to an evening’s entertainment where, as the poster says, ‘Every Lady is a Perfect Gentleman’.
PICTURE :- In the bar at the famous Collins ' Music Hall in London's Islington - the oldest music hall in London , where all the old big names , from George Robey and Charlie Chaplin to Marie Lloyd and Gracie Fields have appeared - the cast of the all- male show ' This Was The Army ' has been touring Britain for nine years now . The one woman in this picture is Mrs Hazel Lewis , wife of the Chief Comedian and originator of the show , Jack Lewis . She trains the chorus ' girls ' , and is herself a former dancer . On the extreme left are Johnnie Ross and Sonnie ( second from left).

TOASTS TO THE SERGEANT
Famous warriors whose replicas adorn British public houses received a ' recruit ' when, in the presence of a guard of honour of pensioners from the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, the Ensign of the Old Sergeant public house at Enfield, Middlesex, was ceremonially unveiled.
The sign incorporates a portrait of Sergeant Stephens, a Chelsea pensioner who served in the Army for 21 years.

The Ancient Order of Purbeck Marblers.
The Shrove Tuesday Football Ceremony of the Purbeck Marblers dates back many years and takes place in Corfe Castle, Dorset. The event occurs on the date that new apprentices are introduced to the Company of Marblers and Stonecutters of Purbeck.
Will he get there? An apprentice tries to manoeuvre his way across the road and almost comes a 'cropper' at the hands of a "free man" of the Order. If the beer is spilt he must go back for more.

Outside the Fox Inn, the vicar of St Edward the Martyr's Church has a word with Nelson Burt. As the last quarryman to marry, Nelson has the right and duty of putting the football into play. The Marblers will kick it a short distance to symbolise the yearly marking of the boundaries of their ancient quarrying rights.

Successful apprentice, Fred Williams, holds another quart of beer aloft outside the Fox Inn in celebration. The last rite of the Ancient Order of Purbeck Marblers ceremonial induction of new 'free men' requires the candidate to cross the street to the Order's meeting house, in the face of stiff opposition, without spilling a quart pot of beer. Now Fred is a member of a very exclusive trade union, which is so old that it cannot trace its origin.
