The camp is operated by a company called Digital Detox based in Oakland, CA that promotes “reconnecting by disconnecting” through an alternative experience in nature. When arriving at the camp participants deposit all their digital devices including mobile phones, iPads, laptops, digital cameras, watches, and car keys, all of which they’ll pick up upon their departure. Throughout the 4 days weekend campers sleep in bunk beds in a number of villages and participate in various activities including a variety of workshops (called “play-shops”), color wars, talent night, an evening of silence, and themed closing party. Camp Grounded took place for the first time in June 2013. The 300 tickets for the camp were sold within a week, an indicator to the growing awareness of the effects of over-using technology. Following the initial success the organizing company organized a number of sessions in the following year and started expanding into additional states.
