Power line pylons shaped like animals could be cropping up all over Austria to make the structures more acceptable across the countryside.
The idea is for the pylons to supply energy across the nation’s nine states with each representing a particular type of fauna associated with it.
Named the Austrian Power Giants, the first two concept pylons created feature a stag and a stork.
The modern high-voltage line infrastructure is designed to strengthen the economic and tourism location in the regions with the nature-themed pylons.
The design re-think has come after Austria Power Grid admitted the classic pylon designs have not met with “positive” public acceptance.
A spokesman said: “The Austrian Power Giants combine innovative pylon design with aspects of nature in the form of animals in order to harmonise electricity infrastructure with nature.
“An Austrian Power Giant is to be designed for each of the nine federal states in Austria in the form of an animal that matches the respective federal state.
For example, the annual visits of storks to the state of Burgenland means the bird was chosen as its symbolic animal.
The deer represents the densely wooded Alpine foothills of Lower Austria.
Both have already been pre-tested for structural and electrical engineering to ensure technical feasibility.
