'Every time I write, it's like the first time': Joyce Carol Oates on her 61 novels, Twitter storms and widowhood
Joyce Carol Oates: 'I don't think people's opinions are very important.'
At 84, Oates still knows how to strike a nerve. She talks about Babysitter - her new book inspired by a Detroit serial killer - loneliness and her controversial tweet about white male writers.
Joyce is 84, but her work remains exceptionally relevant. The film adaptation of her 2000 novel Blonde, a fictionalised account of the life of Marilyn Monroe, is to be released on Netflix next month, while Babysitter is unflinching in its detailing of sexual assault before the #MeToo era.

Inmates stage 'Shawshank' style prison break from Clinton Correctional Facility, Dannemora, New York, America - 15 Jun 2015
Married prison worker Joyce Mitchell, 51, who has been charged with helping convicted murderer Richard Matt and fellow killer David Sweat in their Shawshank -style escape from the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, over a week ago. She appeared at a late-night arraignment and pleaded not guilty to a felony count of promoting prison contraband and a misdemeanor count of criminal facilitation. Mitchell is alleged to have brought hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch and a screwdriver into the prison five weeks before the escape. Mitchell, the prison tailoring shop instructor, is said to have fallen for killer Richard Matt's charm and is alleged to have agreed to pick them up in her car and drive them away. But she is said to have changed her mind because she still loved her husband and felt guilty over her involvement.
