The Yeomen of the Guard review - tonal uncertainties but G&S update has plenty to enjoy
Jo Davies' 1950-set staging of the late G&S opera may not fully cohere but musically we're in excellent hands and Richard McCabe's is a moving - and sweatily desperate - Jack Point.
Set squarely in the 16th century, this late work by Gilbert and Sullivan uses the conventions of romantic opera of the 19th century. Director Jo Davies, however, updates the action to the 20th century at the time of Elizabeth II's coronation.

Picture of the red and white Scania lorry belonging to Mo Robinson, from Northern Ireland, the 25-year-old lorry driver arrested on suspicion of murder after his lorry was discovered in Grays, Essex, today at 1.40am with the dead bodies of 39 people locked inside. CCTV has surfaced showing him driving his red and white Swedish Scania lorry just 30 minutes before it was found full of dead suspected migrants. Robinson's Facebook page reveals he is a lorry driver and contains pictures (such as this one) of what appears to be the same lorry as the one involved in the deaths.
Lorry driver arrested after bodies of 39 people found in a lorry container, Grays, Essex, UK - 23 Oct 2019
There is an identical 'The Ultimate Dream' decal on the windscreen with Robinson branding it "the Polar express" on his page. Experts have said the container appears to be refrigerated, and if so temperatures can reach as low as -25C inside. The lorry is believed to have made a journey in excess of 2500 miles from Bulgaria to Brirain and if the refrigeratin was turned on inside then the death of the occupants could have occured in a relatively short space pf time. it is understood the lorry travelled from Bulgaria and entered the UK via a ferry crossing from Dublin to Holyhead in Wales on Saturday. It means the people inside may have been dead for at least four days. Police are now working to establish the identify of the 38 adults and one teenager inside the lorry and say it will be a "lengthy process". Mo Robinson's lorry is pictured here on his "open" Facebook page.
