'Be yourself': Ukraine launches PR drive to attract recruits to weary army
Kyiv is trying out novel means to lure in volunteers after draft expansion prompted thousands to go into hiding.
Attempts to attract new soldiers have been stymied by widespread reports and rumours online over inadequate training, poor commanders and the reality of gruesome trench fighting. Only 35% of Ukrainian men said they were prepared to serve if called up, one survey in March said.
Billboards have sprung up all across Kyiv, with different army units painting a more positive picture of the fighting as part of the defence ministry's new strategy to make recruitment into the military more appealing. It sees volunteering as preferable to conscription.

The Old Bury, the oldest house in Stevenage old town, was completely made-over using state-of-the art projecting mapping and the connective power of Samsung SmartThings technology to thrill a few lucky local families in a series of private COVID compliant performances ahead of Halloween night.
The display was created following research by Samsung which reveals 63% of Brits plan to celebrate Halloween at home this year – keeping the Halloween spirit alive despite the current restrictions.
Onlookers were left in awe as they witnessed a custom built 13ft high mechanical skeleton, a live-action dance troupe and a field of smart-tech powered pumpkins come to life.
Theatrical fog and lighting added to the spectacle, as the entire lightshow was synched to a modern Halloween music track and spooky sound effects.

Land Rover has started its countdown to the world premiere of the new Range Rover Evoque with a fleet of wire form sculptures inspired by the new model. The full-scale artworks stopped pedestrians in their tracks at locations across London.
Land Rover pioneered the luxury compact SUV sector with the original Range Rover Evoque in 2010, and the next generation of the award-winning model promises to make a similar impact, introducing new standards of design, capability and sustainability.
The brightly-coloured installations were produced by the same Land Rover Design team responsible for shaping the new Evoque and embody the reductive design philosophy that has informed its elegant proportions. Blending simple lines with modernity, the 1:1 scale wire forms showcase the distinctive fast roofline and rising waistline that define new Evoque’s coupe-like silhouette.
Four of the eye-catching sculptures were parked at exclusive addresses around Kensington and Chelsea, finished in distinctive shades of copper, red and blue.
Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Chief Design Officer said; "The wire forms have been created to preview the new Evoque – which is the embodiment of Range Rover’s modernist design approach. Where better to put these bespoke installations on display than in the heart of London – one of the greatest cities in the world."
With global sales of over 750,000 and more than 225 international awards to its name, the Range Rover Evoque is a global success story.
Order books for the new luxury compact SUV, which has been designed, engineered and will be manufactured in Britain, are due to open at the same time as the world debut in London.

Unsuspecting commuters were given a stunning show this morning as a sensational acrobatic duo showed off their gymnastic flair and flexibility in several commuter hotspots in Central London and on the Underground.
The team of elite gymnasts wow-ed passers-by as they showed off their skills in a variety of athletic and daring moves. They were spotted tumbling down a tube carriage in Charing Cross, vaulting benches in parks, back-flipping down Oxford Street and somersaulting on the South Bank.
Commuters travelling to work were left in awe while watching the acrobatic spectacle. The gymnastic commuters were unleashed as part of a marketing stunt from Nutri-Grain to celebrate the launch of their new Nutri-Grain bars, which are made with six B vitamins and iron, known to help release energy from the food we eat and keep us fueled throughout the day.
The acrobats were commissioned on the back of new research from Nutri-Grain, which reveals that nine in ten Brits (89 per cent) experience a slump in energy levels by mid-morning, 92 per cent find themselves craving a pick-me-up snack by mid-morning and one third of Brits (33 per cent) regularly skip breakfast.
The phenomenal performance came from London-based acrobats Benjamin Jones and Abigail Mason, who together are trained in gymnastics, dance, contortion and martial arts, among other disciplines. The team are part of Nutri-Grain’s ‘morning fuel’ ambassador sampling team who are shaking up the morning commute in London this week appearing at train stations across the city.
A spokesperson for Nutri-Grain said: “We wanted to shake up the dreary commute and show Londoners what it looks like to be fully energized in the morning. Our amazing gymnasts embody what it means to have the ‘morning fuel’ we all need to get through the day.”
After witnessing the incredible display, commuters were treated to a Nutri-Grain bar, which are available in three flavours: Apple, Strawberry and Blueberry.

Londoners were given the Halloween heebie-jeebies as a terrifying giant creepy crawly was spotted prowling the streets of the capital.
Commuters and tourists experienced arachnophobia as a metre-wide spider was seen scuttling past shops and supermarkets, lurking under bridges and pouncing joggers and cyclists in parks across the city.
Hidden cameras recorded reactions, as it was unleashed on the public and jumped out on passers-by. The eight-legged monster prank was staged by drinks brand Fanta to promote their Halloween campaign.
The supersized animatronic arachnid, capable of scuttling at top speeds of 15mph, features a set of prominent fangs, glowing beady eyes and hisses upon approaching its prey.
The animatronic creepy crawly, controlled by a remote operator, comes equipped with a winch pulley system which allows the spider to plunge at dramatic speeds from trees and bridges using a web to anchor itself. The spook-tacular spider took a team of special effects artists four weeks to complete.
The transformation of the mechanical monster, created in Fanta’s laboratory, was inspired by a concoction of a hairy Tarantula, an Australian Funnel-Web Spider and the world’s most deadly arachnid - the Brazilian Wandering Spider.
Having being tricked, victims of the prank were treated to one of Fanta’s new limited edition Halloween flavours; Blood Orange Zero and Pink Grapefruit Zero.
New research of 2,000 British teenagers specially commissioned by Fanta, reveals that nearly half (45%) of teens look forward to Halloween more than Christmas
Preparation is key, as a third (33%) of young adults start planning their costumes, perfecting their spooky make-up and decorating the house for Halloween over a month in advance.

With an enigmatic smile that has mesmerised audiences for more than 500 years, Leonardo Da Vinci’s world-renowned Mona Lisa is undoubtedly one of the most famous paintings of all time. Anyone who looks into her eyes cannot help but wonder: Who is she, and what is she thinking? The BMW Group has now revealed her secrets in an eye-catching campaign to promote the new BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant on the square in front of Centre Georges-Pompidou in Paris. Passers-by could ask the icon questions – and learn surprising facts about the mysterious lady. For the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW broke the Mona Lisa’s silence.
Anyone who wished to have a conversation with Mona Lisa could do so from 1-3 October on the square in front of the Centre Georges-Pompidou in the heart of Paris. The campaign was part of the BMW Group programme for the Paris Motor Show, the “Mondial de l’Automobile 2018”. While visitors to the Louvre are often surprised by how small the Mona Lisa is in real life, the talking version has impressed with its size alone. 10 metres high and 7.5 metres wide, visitors could check out the enormous LED installation for three days in Paris. The total structure, which was unveiled on Monday after four days of construction, weighs in at 36 tonnes.
Using face-tracking, Mona Lisa was also able to move her face and hands on the 75-square-metre LED screen and answer questions visitors speak into a microphone. The grande dame spoke fluent French, English and German. It turned out Mona Lisa is a car enthusiast and especially looking forward to the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, which already comes with integrated BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and celebrated its world premiere at the “Mondial de l’Automobile 2018”.
