A guitar belonging to Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher that was smashed by his brother Liam when the band broke up has sold for £289,800 GBP / €332.575 euros at auction.
The record-breaking sale on October 23 was a new world record for an Oasis instrument and also marked the highest total ever achieved for a piece of the group’s memorabilia.
The 1960 cherry red Gibson ES-355 guitar was famously damaged before the British band were due to take the stage at a concert in Paris on August 28, 2009.
It was the final straw in a long history of volatile sibling rivalry between Liam and Noel Gallagher before the group reunited this year for a string of sold out concerts around the world.
An intense backstage fight, which involved the guitar, led to Noel's abrupt departure from the band minutes before they were set to perform at the Rock en Seine festival.
Though the full extent of the damage is not publicly detailed, reports indicate that Liam wielded the guitar “like an axe" and smashed it against the floor.
Noel walked out of the dressing room, got into a taxi, and quit the band.
The damaged guitar was later restored by a London luthier.
OPS: The same sale also saw Michael Jackson's white fedora hat from 1988's Smooth Criminal music video sell for £50,400 GBP

Tough guy actor Arnold Schwarzenegger has told how singer Michael Jackson turned up on a movie set three days in a row to spend time with the former body builder.
And later when Jackson and Arnie were invited to a Hollywood producer’s home for dinner, the late Thriller star. Aged in his late 30s at the time, brought his own chef.
Schwarzenegger, 77, speaking to US chat show host Jimmy Kimmel, said the bizarre meeting was on the set of Arnie’s 1996 Christmas comedy movie, Jingle All The Way.
Arnie plays a father trying to buy an action figure of a character called Turbo Man for his son.
He recalled; “He came to the set when we were filming at at Universal Studio
He came to the set and then he visited me a few days in a row uh in my motorhome, in the trailer when they had lunch.
“He just wanted to schmooze and he wanted to talk about the film.
“I was dressed as Turbo Man because we were doing the scene where I fly through the air as Turbo Man which was the character that was sold for Christmas and then they ran out of this toy.
“He just thought it was a fantastic script.
“He loves Christmas movies.”
