Beachcombing with metal detector on Athens beaches
February 23, 2025 - South Athenian Beach, Greece: Aggelos K., a 25-year-old plumber working in central Athens, is a healthy and financially independent young man who earns his own living. On his days off, he spends time beachcombing along the nearby Athenian rivieras, where he tries to collect euros and rings as he walks on the beach with a metal detector. His goal is to save around 1,500 euros to buy a more efficient metal detector. The one he currently owns, which costs about 300 euros, makes it difficult for him to find valuable items like gold rings. However, he collects coins ranging from 0.50 to 2 euros, so in 3-4 hours, he can gather nearly 50 euros per day, equivalent to a day’s salary for someone living in Greece. Till now he has collected 300 euros. A few kilometers away, in the Helliniko area, the beach is being privatized, and the country’s tallest residential skyscraper, The Riviera Tower, is under construction. Mandy Ogunmokun: I was an addict, a prisoner, a sex worker. I thought the world had written me off - but I saved myself
For two decades Mandy Ogunmokun was either in jail or selling sex to pay for drugs. She had four children - but never got the chance to raise them. Now clean, she has devoted her life to helping other struggling women.
