Stevie Wonder in Performance in Honour of the Gershwin Prize at the White House, Washington D.C., America - 25 Feb 2009
President Obama has honoured his music idol, Stevie Wonder, during a special ceremony. The White House's East Room was transformed into an intimate, miniature concert hall for the event, which saw the Motown legend awarded with the Library of Congress' Gershwin prize. This prize is named in memory of George and Ira Gershwin and is awarded for lifetime achievement in popular music. Speaking at the event, the President said multi-Grammy winning soul star Wonder had been the "soundtrack to my youth" and that he doubted his wife would have married him if he hadn't been a fan. In his thank you speech Wonder, who was an early supporter of Obama, paid tribute to the new president. He commented: "What is truly exciting for me today is that we truly have lived to see a time and a space where America has a chance to again live up to the greatness that it deserves to be seen and known as".
