Commuters across the UK are set to endure the worst train strike in decades after workers at five major rail companies walked out on Wednesday morning. Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union on Southern, South Western Railway and Greater Anglia are staging a 48-hour strike while a 24-hour walk-out will be held by staff at Merseyrail and Arriva Rail North. Rail companies have assured customers that many services will not be affected, but several routes into London are set to face disruption and cancellations – with passengers encouraged to seek alternative travel. Bao players in Stone Town, Zanzibar. Bao is a traditional mancala board game played in most of East Africa including Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros, Malawi, as well as some areas of DR Congo and Burundi. It is most popular among the Swahili people of Tanzania and Kenya; the name itself "Bao" is the Swahili word for "board" or "board game". In Tanzania, and especially Zanzibar, a "bao master" (called bingwa, "master"; but also fundi, "artist") is held in high respect. In Malawi, a close variant of the game is known as Bawo, which is the Yao equivalent of the Swahili name. (Photo by Sergi Reboredo/Sipa USA) *** Local Caption *** 22204035

Public sector strike marchers
Public Sector workers strike against Pension Cuts. Cambridge, England. 30 November 2011.
Striking public sector workers meet on Parkers Piece in the University City of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. Public sector workers around the UK are staging a strike over pensions in what unions say could be the biggest walkout for a generation. Thousands of schools are closed and hospital operations have been cancelled. Courts and government offices are among disrupted services. David Cameron described the strike as a "damp squib". Unions object to government plans to make their members pay more and work longer to earn their pensions.

8th April 2017. Woolwich Ferry workers are set to go on strike after an alleged four-year campaign of sexual harassment. Travellers face disruption tomorrow due to the dispute, which also involves claims of a "bullying culture". About 95 per cent of the workforce are set to walk out after a member of staff made a formal complaint of sexual harassment. The Standard has learned that in December Tara Brackley, a secretary for Briggs Marine Contractors, which runs the service on behalf of Transport for London, claimed a member of staff had sexually harassed her for years. She told the Standard the man would regularly make lewd comments towards her. She said: "He constantly told me he loved me, that I looked attractive, blowing kisses, sneakily squeezing my shoulders, rubbing and stroking my neck, eyeing me up and down sexually, whispering in my ear, telling me we should run away together, it made me feel very, very uncomfortable. He would not stop even when I asked him to". Pictured : Tara Brackley.
