Village of Garmisch in the bavarian Alps. Bavaria, GERMANY//Village de Garmisch dans les Alpes bavaroises. Baviere, ALLEMAGNE
Bavaria, Germany
THE MAGIC OF BAVARIA
Lederhosen, schnitzel and beer can, of course, be found in abundance in Bavaria, but this German state also has much, much more to offer the traveller.
Think breathtaking alpine scenery, quaint towns and historical cities, fairytale castles and historic customs and traditions - Germany's largest bundesland has it all.
Situated in the south-east of the country, Bavaria extends from the North German Plain down into the Alps.
It shares international borders with the Czech Republic and Austria as well as with Switzerland. The awe inspiring Bavarian Alps define the border with Austria and within the range is the highest peak in Germany, the Zugspitze.
Along with the Rheinland and Berlin, Bavaria is Germany's most popular tourist destination and it isn't hard to see why.
The town of Mittenwald is situated in the Valley of the River Isar and is one of the best known tourist places in the Bavarian Alps. The town is famous for the manufacture of violins, violas and cellos, and its streets are littered with handcrafted signs advertising where the instruments are for sale.
The most significant landmark in the village is the pink colored Roman Catholic church of Saints Peter and Paul, which is typical of the region. The Bavarians have a long history of decorating the exteriors of their houses and businesses with both religious and historic paintings. And the church in Mittenwald, as well as many of the surrounding buildings, is decorated with elaborate paintings on its exterior walls.
Fussen is a small enchanting town, rich in culture and art, that is located on the banks of the Lech River. Standing at 808 m above sea level it is he highest town in Bavaria and a...

Prince William has become the latest member of the royal family, along with his father and the Duke of Edinburgh, to learn to fly with the Royal Air Force. Along with 25 other RAF cadets he graduated today (11 April) and was presented with his 'wings' by his father at a graduation ceremony at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire. His graduation comes a day after the RAF celebrated its 90th anniversary at a dinner that was attended by the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and William, along with RAF personnel of all ranks. After the ceremony, Prince Charles and his wife joined RAF graduates and their families at a reception before staying for lunch. In a move guaranteed to fuel speculation about their relationship, William's girlfriend Kate Middleton was also a guest. The Prince - an officer in the Household Cavalry regiment - has been following a shortened 12 week course that is designed to make him a competent flier but not an operational one. He is now shortly due to serve on attachment to the Royal Navy

Alysson Wilson has lost a staggering 30 stone after doctors gave her just 12 months to live. Her husband Derek took drastic action to save her, and devised special exercise and diet plans to save her. Alysson has gone from a massive 42 stone to 12 stone, her waist has gone from 108 inches to 30 inches, and she has dropped an amazing 17 dress sizes.
Record slimmer Alysson Wilson, Manchester, Britain - 2009
BIG LOSER ALYSSON IS A SUPER SLIMMER WINNER
When Alysson Wilson took a good look at herself in a full length mirror while weighing a staggering 42 stone (266kg) she was so shocked at what she saw she collapsed to the floor.
And after doctors gave her just 12 months to live if she didn't lose weight her husband Derek decided to take drastic action.
He devised an exercise and eating plans to help her lose weight and his persistence and dedication has paid off because Alysson has lost a staggering 30 stone (190kg).
Her weight has dropped from 42 stone (266kg) to a slim 12 stone (76kg) and her waist, which at one point was so large it needed two tape measures to measure it, has shrunk from a massive 108 inches (274cm) to a svelte 30inches (76cm).
In fact Alysson's transformation has been so dramatic that she has successfully slimmed her way into the record books as Britain's biggest ever female slimmer.
The 33-year-old electrical appliance manager comments: "I've been given a completely new lease of life - and its all down to my wonderful husband.
"If he hadn't taken me in hand and helped me to lose all this weight, I would have been dead by now.
"I was so enormous at 42 stone (266kg) that I couldn't bend down to put on my shoes. I couldn't even get dressed myself or

The Venus of Hohle Fels figurine
Curvy 'Venus' May be Oldest Human Sculpture
CURVY 'VENUS' MAY BE OLDEST HUMAN SCULPTURE
A 35,000-year-old ivory carving of a curvaceous woman found in a German cave is believed to be the oldest known sculpture of the human form.
Archaeologists found the carving in six fragments in Germany's Hohle Fels cave, near Schelklingen. It depicts a woman with protruding breasts, a swollen belly and wide-set thighs.
"It's very sexually charged," said University of Tuebingen archaeologist Nicholas Conard, whose team discovered the figure in September.
Carbon dating suggests the 60-millimetre-long figurine - dubbed the Venus of Hohle Fels - was carved at least 35,000 years ago and suggests Palaeolithic art to be more complex than many had thought
According to the researchers' findings, which are being published in the scientific journal Nature, it may be the oldest piece of its kind yet discovered.
"It's the oldest known piece of figurative sculpture in the world," said Jill Cook, a curator of Paleolithic and Mesolithic material at the British Museum in London.
The discovery predates the well-known Venuses from the Gravettian culture by at least 5,000 years and radically changes our views of the context and meaning of the earliest Palaeolithic art," Conard wrote.
"Before this discovery ... female imagery was entirely unknown."
The figurine's enlarged breasts, bloated belly and thighs also make clear that sexual symbolism was alive and well tens of thousand of years ago, Paul Mellars of the University of Cambridge, wrote in a commentary.
"The feature of the newly discovered figure that will undoubtedly command most attention is its explicitly, almost aggressively, sexual nature, focussed on the sexual c...
