A picture of LIGHTNING striking in Blackpool has come top in the annual Weather Photographer of the Year competition.The photo entitled, Electric Blackpool, taken by Stephen Cheatley, beat more than 4,000 pictures in the contest, which show weather phenomena around the world. Other pictures show a double rainbow over the Grand Canyon, a late season dust storm in Arizona and a spectacular reflection bow in the Lofoten Islands in Norway. The competition was organised by The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) in association with AccuWeather.

Bobcat climbs to top of cactus to avoid being eaten by lion in the Sonoran Desert, Arizona, America - 24 Aug 2011
This unfortunate bobcat landed itself in a prickly situation in an attempt to avoid being eaten by a ferocious lion. The terrified feline raced across a road and climbed 50 feet up to the top of a Giant Saguaro Cactus after being chased by the hungry beast. Thwarted, the lion circled the prickly plant for a few minutes before giving up and wandering off to find an easier meal. However, the bobcat was in now hurry to put its paws on the floor again and remained on top of the cactus in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona for six hours. Camels shelter from the hot sun under rusting shipwrecks near the village of Dzambul, a former fishing town on the shore of the Aral Sea near Aralsk. The Aral Sea, once the world's fourth largest lake, gradually disappeared, since Soviet planners tapped the rivers Syr Darya and Amu Darya in the sixties, in order to irrigate dry land in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Fishermen changed their activities to cattle breeding. Thanks to the new Kok Aral dam, co-financed by the World Bank, the north, Kazakh part of the Aral Sea is slowly being refilled.
