NEWS - Calais: Verlassenes 'Jungle Camp'
Empty, barren and bleak: this wasteland is all that remains of the Jungle migrant camp in Calais. Bulldozers have flattened the vast shanty town, which was home to thousands of people hoping to reach the UK before a mass evacuation began three weeks ago today. Once a bustling sprawl of makeshift shops, huts, tents, community centres, places of worship and a theatre, the land is now eerily empty. A road surrounding it, once the scene of daily clashes between police firing tear gas and rock-throwing migrants, is now guarded by a single police van. The main track through the camp is a mudflat strewn with saucepans, food tins, beer cans, plastic bottles, clothes and shoes. It used to be lined with restaurants and shops, and groups of migrants gathered around camp fires. The Jungle camp in Calais.

War On Christmas: Alan Sailer's Exploding Toys
If you are excited about Christmas, look away now.
Serial object destroyer Alan Sailer has turned his twisted attention to exploding much-loved toys.
The high-speed photography fanatic has selected children's favourites and destroyed them with firecrackers.
And thanks to his photographic expertise, the 57-year-old has managed to capture the moment the poor playthings were blown apart.
Unfortunate toys and characters include a Mickey Mouse mug blowing its top, Tweety Pie losing his head, a troll head cracking up and a Rubik's Cube exploding into pieces.
Alan, from Camarillo, California, explains: "The poor defenseless toys are common so I pick them up from garage sales. I try my best to keep the costs under a dollar per shot.
"I will admit that it is fun to mess with toy archetypes. I have to smile when an icon of sweet innocence like My Little Pony crumbles to pieces in rather horrifying way."
To blow up the objects Alan uses a firecracker modified so that it can be fired using an electrical signal. He then has to synchronise the opening of the camera shutter with the explosion. It does not need to be really accurate, but it does need to be better than lighting a fuse.
"The camera is unimportant, it's not a special camera. I use a Nikon D90 for most of my shots. I have also used an old Nikon F3 film camera, a Canon G6, Rebel XT etc. The camera must have a manual focus and manual settings is all.
"The flash is the key, that and the detector/trigger. I use a home built flash based on a model built in the 1950s by Harold Edgerton. The flash is really fast about 1 millionth of a second and it stops the action.
"The detector/trigger is also critical. It detects that the debris from the explosion has arrived and fires the flash at just the rig...

Fox cubs adopt cuddly toy as surrogate mother, Epsom, Surrey, Britain - 03 Apr 2011

Fox Cubs Adopt Cuddly Toy As Surrogate Mother
A farmer who gave three orphaned fox cubs a children's toy was shocked when the youngsters welcomed the cuddly animal as their surrogate mother.
The father of two found the trio whimpering and shivering at the bottom of his garden in a hole under his shed.
With no sign of their parents, he brought the starving cubs into his family home and gave them a stuffed fox belonging to his three-year-old daughter.
The cubs immediately bonded with the furry toy and have been inseparable from their new 'mum', even refusing to go to sleep at night without it in their basket.
The farmer, from Epsom, in Surrey, insisted on giving staff at Wildlife Aid, in Leatherhead, the toy when he gave them the cubs to be released back into the wild.
Since they were found the youngsters have gained weight and even try to offer food to their 'mum', who has been named Flo after the red head singer Florence Welch.
Founder of the rescue centre Simon Cowell said: "We were quite surprised at first that a farmer would try and save the lives of three little foxes.
"What was really unusual was the cubs seemed to believe the stuffed animal was their mother and would not leave her side.
"When it came to dinner time they would leave some food and push the bowl towards Flo. It seemed like they couldn't understand why she wasn't eating.
"At first we couldn't figure out why they made so much noise when it was time for them to go to sleep, but it was because someone had accidentally taken the toy from their basket.
"After we realised we put it back and they nodded right off.
"When orphaned animals are brought in we normally give them a stuffed toy for a bit of security but we didn't in this case because they already had a bond with Flo.
"They are looking a lot healthier t...

IT'S A DOG EAT CAT WORLD
A dog owner had kittens when she realised her mischievous pup had swallowed a family of toy cats and they had been inside her for a month
Samatha Reed, 42, was shocked to discover Snowy the West Highland Terrier had eaten five ceramic cats with the largest measuring 5cm tall.
Vets made the incredible discovery after the poorly one-year-old pup was sick and stopped eating.
"It is a rather unusual case and one of the most unusual X-rays I've ever seen. We could clearly see a cat inside her stomach. We could see the ears and tail," said Nigel Belgrove, a partner at Cromwell Vets in Huntingdon, Cambs.
Owner Samantha, of Wyton-on-Hill, Cambs, said she became worried when the mischievous dog stopped eating four weeks ago.
She took her to the vets, who thought Snowy had reacted badly to her dog food and asked Mrs Reed to try her on a diet of rice and chicken.
"She was sick for about a month. At first it was just at night, then she started being sick throughout the day too," said Samantha.
"At first the vet thought it may be a sickness bug."
When the new diet failed to work vets carried out urine samples believing it to be a kidney problem, but when these test results were given the all-clear they gave Snowy a course of antibiotics.
It was only when the vets carried out an X-ray of her stomach that they discovered the problem - five toy cats lodged in her belly.
"We were really worried. Snowy is a much-loved member of this family and we feared the worst," said Samantha, who lives with her husband Mick, 42, and children Danielle, nine, Alan, 10, David, 12, and Brian, 13
"I was shocked when the vets phoned to say Snowy had swallowed a few cats. I thought they meant real ones!"
