Ukrainian woman killed on Charlotte train
August 22, 2025 - Charlotte, North Carolina, United States: August 22, 2025 - Charlotte, North Carolina, United States: Iryna Zarutska, a 23 year old Ukrainian refugee living in North Carolina, was fatally stabbed while riding on the Lynx Blue Line train. She had fled her country because of the Russian invasion and arrived with her family in the United States in 2022. Her assailant, Decarlos Brown, who has a history of mental health issues, was arrested upon exiting the train and charged with first-degree murder. He was fare-jumping at the time of the killing, and had been previously arrested multiple times and convicted of robbery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, and larceny, as well as being charged with assault. Zarutska boarded the train wearing her pizzeria work clothes and sat in front of Brown. Four minutes later, Brown pulled a knife and stabbed Zarutska in the neck.
