Crownprince Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands visits Nonolab
November 5, 2010. Enschede, Netherlands.
Crownprince Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands wears a dust proof suit as he tours the new Nanoab at the University of Twente, in Holland, during the official opening.
With the new NanoLab the knowledge infrastructure of the Netherlands will be gaining a real gem. The new MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology has attracted keen interest both in the Netherlands and from the international arena.
The bright red exterior of the new MESA+ NanoLab is itself an eye-catcher, but it is what will happen inside those walls that will really grab the headlines. Nanotechnology is a field that has made significant strides in recent decades.

Fidel Castro
December 7, 1996, Havana, Havana, Cuba: Raul Castro Ruz, brother of Fidel Castro and Minister of Defense of Cuba, looks at his watch during a ceremony for the hundredth birthday of the Cuban National hero Antonio Maceo. In the back Cuban President Fidel Castro Ruz. Castro was born and raised on his family's sugar plantation. He became a lawyer and devoted himself to helping the poor; he intended to run for a parliamentary seat before Batista overthrew the Cuban government. Castro went to court and challenged Batista with violating the constitution, but when his claim was rejected, he started his own army and went through several attempts to start a revolution before Batista fed the country on New Year's Day 1959. The new government was met initally with popular support, even in the face of numerous US attempts to assassinate Castro and inspire an overthrow. Since then, Castro has made Marxist decisions to nationalize industry, confiscate property not owned by Cubans, and enact policies to benefit peasants and laborers. A large anti-Castro middle class community has since fled to Miami. Castro is the world's longest-serving political leader. On July 31, 2006, Fidel Castro temporarily relinquished his presidential powers to his brother Raul saying he suffered gastrointestinal bleeding and will need several weeks of rest. Castro also temporarily relinquished his duties as first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba to Raul, who turned 75 in June. Castro's 80th birthday is on August 13.
