Britain Says Goodbye To Last WWI Soldier
BRITAIN SAYS GOODBYE TO LAST WWI SOLDIER
Thousands of mourners have filled and surrounded Wells Cathedral today for the funeral service of Britain's last survivor of the World War I trenches, Harry Patch.
Mr Patch passed away at the age of 111 in the care home where he spent his final years and from which his coffin was borne on its way along streets lined with mourners to the city's famous cathedral.
Soldiers of the 1st Battalion The Rifles - the modern-day equivalent of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, with whom he served - carried his coffin into the cathedral, watched by Mr Patch's friends and family, as well as the Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Gloucester.
Men from the French, Belgian and German armed forces were also present in recognition of Mr Patch's lifelong desire for peace and reconciliation.
An apprentice plumber from Somerset better known to friends as Harry, Henry John Patch was conscripted into the army at the age of 18.
"I didn't want to sign up," he wrote in his memoir 'The Last Fighting Tommy'.
"I didn't want to go and fight anyone, but it was a case of having to. I went and did what was asked of me and no more."
He was posted to the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, where he served in the trenches as part of a machine-gun crew and fought in the Battle of Passchendaele.
On September 22, 1917, his war came to an end, but the Great War wasn't finished with him yet:
returning from four days on the front line, he and his crew were shelled, killing three of his close friends and leaving him seriously wounded.
Those deaths tormented Mr Patch for the rest of his life, but it was to be another 80 years before he could discuss what happened and the effect it had had on him.

Diana and Kate Style Comparison
U.S. celebrity magazine People recently called Prince William's girlfriend Kate Middleton ``part Di and totally dashing'' - and it's not hard to see what they mean.
In every fashion situation, the pretty 24-year-old seems to echo the delicate styles of the much loved princess. It's almost as if Kate is in training to become a royal herself!
From dressed-down knitted sweaters or cardigans at the polo, to the sophistication of the ultra-chic business-like suit, the two ladies look good at any occasion.
When attending a formal event, Diana and Kate both opted for eye-catching skirts and jackets, with custom-made hats to top off the look. Di wore this style well at an event at London's Caf (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)
