The Teenage Archer Who Could Take On Robin Hood
A schoolboy who dreamed of being Robin Hood has smashed a world long distance adult record in Flight Archery after firing an arrow the length of five football pitches.

Zak Crawford, who is just 14, shot an arrow nearly 500 metres - an incredible 150 metres further than the previous record.

The teenager was competing in the senior under 35lb class using a recurve bow at the Northern Counties Flight Championships at the time.

He managed to smash the world record by firing an arrow 484.29 metres - beating the previous record of 339.06 metres.

He also broke world records in the junior recurve and junior compound categories at the competition at RAF Church Fenton in Yorkshire.

Zak, who started the sport when he was just six, said he was "over the moon" at winning the hat trick of world records.

"I have been practising really hard but I certainly didn't expect to come away from the competition with three world records, I'm over the moon," he said.

"I managed to get the technique right on the day and I couldn't believe it when the arrows went so far."

Zak, who enjoyed watching Robin Hood films as a child, took up archery at the age of six after trying it at a fair.

He became the youngest member of his local club and got into the county team at the age of seven and the East Midlands team two years later when he was just nine.

He initially started with target shooting but was later introduced to Flight Archery, which is based on the distance an arrow travels.

"When I first began I was the youngest in my club and I found it very difficult as I was quite small and the bow was heavy," said Zak, from Corby, Northants.

"But I really enjoyed archery and began training a lot so I soon got used to it."

Zak now trains at Welland Valley...

Sri Lankan Cricket Team Coach Attacked by Terrorists in Lahore, Pakistan - 03 Mar 2009
The Sri Lankan Cricket team was attacked by terrorists today as they arrived for a match at the Gadaffi stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. Seven players and the team's British coach were injured in the attack, while six policemen and a bus driver were killed. As the team's bus negotiated a roundabout just 500m from the stadium, a group of heavily armed men launched a grenade at it and also tried to hit the vehicle with a rocket. When this failed they opened fire on the bus. A 15-minute gun battle ensued between the team's police bodyguards and the gunmen before all 12 attackers fled. The players then took refuge in their dressing room at the stadium before being evacuated by helicopter. Two of the team are reportedly being treated in hospital for injuries sustained in the attack. The match between the Sri Lankan and Pakistan teams would have been the first Test series to have been played in Pakistan for 14 months; others have been cancelled due to security fears.

4 PWRR SOLDIERS FACE DAWN ATTACK
A soldier from 4 PWRR throws a smoke grenade to cover their movement on Salisbury Plain Training Area.

Army Reserve Soldiers from across Hampshire, including Portsmouth and Southampton, who serve with 4th Battalion The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment nicknamed 'The Tigers' have been on Salisbury Plain Training Area in Wiltshire on exercise over the weekend 4th and 6th of December. They were putting their skills to the test in assaulting and securing buildings in an urban warfare environment.

The exercise was delivered at Platoon level, with individuals coming together from across the Battalion's four Companies for their final training weekend of the year, Exercise Punniar Tiger. Approximately 70 soldiers from across the south east took part, although numbers were reduced this year in order to adhere to the COVID-19 restrictions. On receiving orders, the night before, the soldiers moved into position for a final dawn attack on Southdown Barn situated on the Plain which is the largest area of chalk grassland in north-west Europe.

The assault took place on the old barn and its outer farm buildings. It involved the soldiers working through a series of room clearances, climbing over walls and storming the buildings within, using various weapon systems to achieve their objectives, firing hundreds of blank rounds and using special training smoke grenades.

The purpose of the exercise was to develop 4 PWRR's Urban Warfare skills and tactics, techniques and procedures. Whilst the Battalion has no need to train for subterranean warfare, the environment provided the opportunity to develop a number of core skills and capabilities which enhanced their ability to operate within complex terrain.
