Following the trench warfare in the poppy fields of Flanders, Belgium during World War I, poppies have become a symbol of remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime.
Remembrance Day or Poppy Day has been observed since the end of the First World War to remember armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. In most countries, Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of First World War hostilities.

The wonderful evolving instalation, 'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red' marking the centenary of the start of the First World War has been created by artist Paul Cummins with the setting by stage designer Tom Piper. By November the 11th this year there will be 888,246 ceramic poppies filling the moat of the Tower of London, one poppy representing each British man or woman that fell and died during World War One, 1914-1918.
The poppies are for sale at £25 each and any monies raised will be shared between six service charities.

At 1200 today (10 April) a Death Gun Salute was fired to mark the death of His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. Across the United Kingdom, in Gibraltar and on HM Ships at sea, saluting batteries fired 41 rounds at one round every minute for 40 minutes. The public were encouraged to observe the gun salutes from home, they took place behind closed doors but broadcast online and on television.
In London, The Kingís Troop Royal Horse Artillery rode out from their base at Napier Lines, Woolwich Barracks, onto the Parade Ground with 71 horses, 36 of them pulling six 13-pounder field guns dating from the First World War. Their guns fired at the same time as those fired by the Honourable Artillery Companyís Light Guns at the Tower of London and by units from all corners of the United Kingdom including Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh, and British Overseas Territory Gibraltar. At sea, guns fired from Royal Navy saluting warships.
The same guns that will be used at Woolwich Barracks were also fired for Prince Philipís wedding to Her Majesty in 1947 and at Her Majestyís coronation six years later in 1953.

Two mowers run in the moat each morning at walking pace, but around the White Tower a four-wheel-drive model does a night shift to avoid disturbing the resident ravens. They work in a geo-fencing wired area, a similar principle to domestic vacuum robots, with gardeners tracking them on an app. The battery-powered Husqvarna bots, each costing about £4,000, replace ride-on diesel mowers.

A Royal Salute normally comprises 21 guns, this is increased to 41 if fired from a Royal Park or Residence. Uniquely, at The Tower of London which is a Royal Residence, a total of 62 rounds are fired on Royal anniversaries as this also includes an additional 21 guns for the citizens of the City of London to show their loyalty to the Monarch.
Princess Elizabeth became Queen on 6 February 1952 on the day her father, King George VI, died. Although Princess Elizabeth was away in Kenya with the Duke of Edinburgh at the time, tradition dictates that the new monarch accedes to the throne instantly.
