Deer tolerates jackdaws searching for ticks on its head
Deer tolerates jackdaws on its head, Bushy Park, Richmond upon Thames, London, Britain - May 2015

Sometimes with life humiliations, you just have to take it on the chin.

Wildlife photographer Melissa Nolan captured these humourous images of a deer appearing placid as jackdaws searched for ticks on its head.

Melissa shot the images in Bushy Park in Richmond upon Thames.

She says: "I watched the jackdaws searching for juicy ticks to eat within the deer's coat. This was a great example of symbiosis, the deer loses an unwanted guest and the jackdaw gets a meal. That's why the deer is so tolerant of the jackdaws, even though at one point the Jackdaw had its claw right in the deer's eye!"

Red deer stag battle, Bushy Park, London, Britain - 11 Oct 2014
Wildlife photographer Richard Bowler snapped these visceral images of red deer stags battling on Saturday (11 Oct).

They show the territorial males locking horns in battle, before the bloodied loser retreats to a pond to tend its bloody wounds.

Richard says: ?I was in London on Saturday photographing the red deer rut in Bushy park. At last light two stags that had been eyeing each other up all day finally went to battle. It was the most intense fight I've seen as both stags were evenly matched, the fight lasted a good 10 minutes.

?The loser had an antler cut his head quite badly and there was a lot of blood. I photographed it cooling down in one of the ponds with his head covered in blood.?

Red deer rutting season at Bushy Park, London, Britain - 05 Oct 2012
These incredible pictures of majestic bellowing and bracken-covered stags have been captured at the start of the rutting season. The red deer were snapped on an autumn morning in the undergrowth at Bushy Park in London. At this time of year the biggest and strongest males round up a group of females for mating and drive away rivals by bellowing and fighting them off. The stags with their bracken crowns were spotted by amateur photographer Richard Bond, 53, who spent four hours snapping them in the Royal park. "It was amazing to see the stags preparing for the rutting," he added. "The full rut hasn't quite started but I think it will be quite soon now." Richard also captured a photo of a female deer with a jackdaw perched on her shoulder. The birds often settle on red deer and pick out mites and ticks to keep them clean. He added: "It's a really lovely part of nature and they seem to have a real acceptance of each other."
