September 7, 1974, Washington, District of Columbia, USA: United States President Gerald Ford presents a study in thought as he puffs on his pipe at his desk in the Oval Office in the White House. He was contemplating the question of amnesty for draft dodgers and deserters before making a nation wide announcement Gerald R. Ford, who became 38th president of the United States after the resignation of Richard Nixon's scandal-shattered White House and the only one never elected to nationwide office, has died at the age of 93. The news was released by Mrs. Ford in a brief statement issued from her husband's office in Rancho Mirage. The statement did not say where or when Ford died or list a cause of death. Ford had battled pneumonia in January 2006 and underwent two heart treatments, including an angioplasty and a pacemaker implant, in August. ///Gerald Ford smokes a pipe.. Credit: Polaris
