SNBison battle through the winter snow
A snow-covered bison battles blistering winds and harsh winter conditions. The large animal, which has a specially adapted fleece to keep warm, was photographed enduring brutal weather in the USA.

The images were taken by Peter Batty in Yellowstone Park, which sees tremendous blizzards in the winter. Mr Batty, 61, is a retired software executive who moved from the UK to Denver in the US. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS. (FOTO: DUKAS/SOLENT NEWS)

HE'LL RE-EGRET THAT...A pair of egrets battle it out midair. The two white birds fought after they got too close to one another while fishing for food.

Boris Droutman took these pictures at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach, California, USA. Describing them, the 64 year old said: "There was a mini fish feeding frenzy going on, and about a dozen snowy egrets were participating alongside a half dozen brown pelicans, cormorants, terns, and gulls.

As polar bears wait for the ice to freeze over so they can go out on it to hunt, they playfight with each other in order to practice their prey catching skills. Neither of the bears were seriously hurt as they exchanged punches but the smaller bear had some blood on its coat from when the pair’s teeth clashed.

Semi-professional wildlife photographer Russell Millner captured the photo on the Hudson Bay near the town of Arviat in Northern Canada. The 61 year old, from Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria, said: “It was pretty spectacular to see - I’ve photographed polar bears before in a number of different places, but this was the first time I’d seen them playfight like this SEE OUR COPY FOR MORE DETAILS

FEATURE - Skrupellose Stare kämpfen um Nahrung

A wildlife photographer has captured a series of images of starlings ferociously battling it out over food.

Russell Taylor from Upchurch, Kent snapped the birds in his back garden.

Once lockdown was announced Russell could no longer venture out to his favourite wildlife spots, so decided to focus his attention on his own doorstep.

Because of the length of lockdown, Russell has been lucky enough to witness starlings arrive with their fledglings to raid his garden bird feeders, to them now being old enough to battle it out with their parents for food.

"You watch these once proud parents degenerate into nervous wrecks trying to satisfy their fledglings insatiable demand for food,' explains Russell.

"And then, when the youngsters finally become independent, there is no blessed relief for these adults, as the bird feeder becomes an arena of every bird for themselves, parents, brothers, sisters... there is no pretence. There is only survival..

"The garden is now officially a Wild West saloon bar!"

A gaggle of geese have made their next in an unusual place - 40 feet up a tree in a London park.

The two Egyptian geese nest inside a hole in the tree and then sit on the branches to take in the view at Richmond Park in Richmond, London.

The birds were spotted by nature photographer Ian Schofield, who was amazed when he saw them nesting up a tree as he has never seen anything like it before.
