Protest Against A NGE Roads' Asphalt Plant For The A69 Highway In Villeneuve-Les-Lavaur
Some protesters gather near an NGE Roads' asphalt plant near Villeneuve-Les-Lavaur, France, on November 8, 2025. The banner reads 'Asphalt? To your good health!' The collective 'Collectif sans bitume' (i.e., 'Collective without asphalt') walks against the planned opening of a temporary asphalt plant for the A69 highway near the village of Villeneuve-Les-Lavaur. Inhabitants express concern about the environmental and sanitary impacts of this plant. Several studies show an increase in autoimmune diseases and cancers near asphalt plants. NGE Roads and the Tarn's Prefect claim there will be no negative effects as NGE Roads will measure the pollutants emitted in the air, and inhabitants will be informed if there is a problem with air quality. No measures will be taken on the soil or vegetables. The main association 'La Voie est Libre' (i.e., 'The Way is Free') and other opponents want the construction of the highway to be stopped until all judicial decisions on the content are given. Opponents of this project argue that the reprofiling of the N126 will suffice for the 6,000 vehicles planned per day and would cost far less money. The A69 highway will cost EUR512 million (in 2018 euros without inflation) for 54 kilometers. (Photo by Alain Pitton/NurPhoto) -

Protest Against A NGE Roads' Asphalt Plant For The A69 Highway In Villeneuve-Les-Lavaur
Protesters stand on the A69 highway between Toulouse and Castres near an NGE Roads' asphalt plant near Villeneuve-Les-Lavaur. The collective 'Collectif sans bitume' (i.e., 'Collective without asphalt') walks against the planned opening of a temporary asphalt plant for the A69 highway near the village of Villeneuve-Les-Lavaur. Inhabitants worry about the environmental and sanitary impacts of this plant. Several studies show an increase in autoimmune diseases and cancers near asphalt plants. NGE Roads and the Tarn's Prefect say there are no negative effects as NGE Roads will measure the pollutants emitted in the air, and inhabitants will be informed if there is a problem with air quality. No measures are done on the soil or vegetables. Diamonds could shine a light on the battle against cancer.
Researchers have built a new diamond-based sensor that could be used to better find tumours through tracing magnetic fluid injected in the body.
A cancer diagnosis is most problematic when cells from the tumour have spread to other organs known as metastasis.
This most often happens through the lymph nodes and the lymphatic draining system.
Tests to find whether cancer cells are lodged in the lymph nodes are the gold standard for detecting metastasis and directing the course of treatment.
Researchers at the UK’s University of Warwick report they have built a new non-toxic and non-radioactive device that uses the unique properties of diamonds to diagnose metastasised breast cancer.
This device is ultra-sensitive, handheld and works at long ranges, providing an upgraded solution to a regular challenge that cancer surgeons must cope with.
The diamond sensor works by detecting magnetic tracer fluid containing iron oxide nanoparticles which is introduced into the patient during or before breast cancer surgery.
The tracer fluid is injected into the tumour and then travels to the lymph nodes alongside metastasised cancer cells.
A magnetic field sensor based on a diamond can then locate the tracer fluid and pinpoint the lymph nodes to be surgically removed to stop the cancer spread.
Its compact design is achieved by using a tiny 0.5 mm diamond and a small permanent magnet that is attached to the probe head.
This eliminates the need for bulky electronics allowing for a handheld versatile tool.
OPS:Image of the diamond magnetometer probe head - 10mm in diameter, which means it is the first diamond sensor to be able to detect magnetic tracer fluid while being small enough for endoscopic use and keyhole surgery.
