Wonders of the Deep: New Species Among Discoveries
A very cute, purple octopus is one of the unidentified species discovered on a deep-sea expedition.
The finds came as part of a 20-day research trip off Canada's Atlantic coast which arrived back on Wednesday (28 July).
A team of 27 Canadian and Spanish researchers used a remotely operated vehicle (called ROPOS) deployed from the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Hudson to dive to the bottom of the sea.
It fed back images of fascinating habitats, ranging from terraces full of vibrant sponges and corals to sandy bottoms nearly devoid of life.
The team catalogued around 500 samples taken from parts of the Flemish Cap, the Orphan Knoll and the Sable Gully. They also believe they have discovered at least 11 potentially new species.
The farthest point of research was located about 600 kilometres east off St. John's, Newfoundland, while ROPOS worked at a maximum depth of about 9,800 feet (3,000 metres).
Kevin MacIsaac, a Bedford Institute of Oceanography taxonomist, said 30 to 40 species of coral and sponges were found, although there were several species he could not identify.
"It was kind of embarrassing," he said. "Time and time again, we were going forward and saying, 'We don't know what it is.' And, they'd say, 'What do you mean, you don't know what it is?' "
"It's been really spectacular," Ellen Kenchington, research scientist with the Fisheries Department of Canada -one of the organisations involved in the project - told Canada's CTV News.
"It's really changing our perception of the diversity that's out there. ... We're seeing new species in deeper waters."
The research trip should help scientists advise fishery managers on how to best protect the coral and sponges as new ...

Matching Outfits (11) - 2010
Someone wearing the same dress as them!? It's enough to depress any fashion forward starlet.
Picking an outfit already seen gracing the body of another is an occupational hazard when you're a celeb.
But when there's only so many designers looks to go around identikit stars are sometimes inevitable.
And when the inevitable happens comparisons are simply unavoidable.
All a star can do is cross their fingers and hope that they come out top of the frocks.
After all, it doesn't matter who wore it first - it's all about who wore it best.

Ian Reid, a firefighter from Thurso, Scotland, who had the lower portion of his right arm amputated after a bus accident, has become the first user of the i-LIMB Pulse prosthetic hand
Firefighter First To Get i-LIMB Pulse Prosthetic Hand
FIREFIGHTER FIRST TO GET i-LIMB PULSE PROSTHETIC HAND
Ian Reid was on a summer holiday in Gran Canaria in 2004, when he was involved in a tragic bus accident that claimed the life of his wife and left him with horrific injuries to his right arm.
After a brake failure, the bus rolled onto its side and slid down a steep road, with Ian's arm horrifically trapped.
The firefighter from the Scottish Highlands spent a week in hospital in Gran Canaria, an experience which he recalls as being the worst of his life.
"I couldn't speak the language and was in a lot of pain and discomfort the whole time," he says.
After a week, his insurance company flew him back to Scotland, where he spent several months in intensive care in Aberdeen.
"It was good to be back home, so my family could be with me," recalls the father of three. "My mum and dad came down from Thurso and stayed by my side the whole time, while friends and family pulled together to make sure the kids were looked after."
Ian's injuries were severe, but he still had some remnant bone and tissue from his hand, and the first goal of surgeons was to try and save whatever function they might be able to from his remaining limb.
"It was a terrible-looking injury, like something out of a horror movie," says Ian. "The surgeons tried to retain a basic open and close pinch between my finger and thumb, but it didn't work out in the end."
"Some of the doctors still wanted me to keep what I had left, because they felt that a prosthetic device wouldn't be able to give me back anything more, but I had really come to hate m...
