Gale-force winds blow away £20m sandscaping project in North Norfolk.
£20m sandscaping project on the north Norfolk coast is blown away by storms with gale force winds. Pictured: sand drifts on the coastal road in Bacton.
1.8m cubic metres of sand was pumped onto the beaches in front of the Bacton gas terminal (which imports a third of all UK gas supplies) and the villages of Bacton and Walcott in Norfolk UK in 2019.
The project was expected to provide protection to the gas terminal for about 20 years and yet the strong northerly gales over the last few days have almost removed all the new sand from the beaches.

Mars dust storm
Mars dust storm.
The high resolution stereo camera on board ESAÕs Mars Express captured this impressive upwelling front of dust clouds Ð visible in the right half of the frame Ð near the north polar ice cap of Mars in April this year.
It was one of several local small-scale dust storms that have been observed in recent months at the Red Planet, which is currently enduring a particularly intense dust storm season. A much larger storm emerged further southwest at the end of May and developed into a global, planet-encircling dust storm within several weeks.
The intensity of this major event means very little light from the Sun reaches the martian surface, a situation extreme enough that NASAÕs 15-year old Opportunity rover has been unable to recharge its batteries and call home: it has been in hibernation mode since mid-June.
Dust storms on Mars occur regularly during the southern summer season when the planet is closer to the Sun along its elliptical orbit. The enhanced solar illumination causes stronger temperature contrasts, with the resulting air movements more readily lifting dust particles from the surface Ð some of which measure up to about 0.01 mm in size.
Martian dust storms are very impressive, both visually like in this image and in terms of the intensity and duration of the rarer global events, but they are generally weaker compared to hurricanes on Earth. Mars has a much lower atmospheric pressure Ð less than one hundredth of EarthÕs atmospheric pressure at the surface Ð and martian storms have less than half the typical wind speeds of hurricanes on Earth.
The current storm is being monitored by five ESA and NASA orbiters, while NASAÕs Curiosity rover has been observing it from the ground thanks to its nuclear-powered battery. Understanding more about how global storms form and evolve will be critical for future solar-powered missionCredit: ESA / eyevine

NEWS - Sturmtief Ophelia taucht die Landschaft in Orange
London was shrouded in darkness again on the second day of a dust phenomenon caused by Storm Ophelia. Sky-watchers described the atmosphere as "apocalyptic" as disrupted weather systems from the storm tinted the clouds above the capital a dark sepia colour. Pictures taken from the viewing platform on the Shard showed the gloomy clouds blanketing the sprawling city on Tuesday afternoon. One Londoner described the atmosphere across the city as "spooky", and several commented that it was akin to a "partial eclipse".

Syrian-Kurdish YPJ fighters on the Syrian-Iraq Border - 28 Sep 2014
Facing each other across the Iraq-Syria border, the towns of Al-Yarubiyah, Syria, and Rabia, Iraq, were taken by Islamic State insurgents in August 2014. Since then The town of Al-Yarubiyah and parts of Rabia have been re-taken by fighters from the Syrian Kurdish YPG. At present the situation in the towns is static, but with large exchanges of sniper and heavy machine gun fire as well as mortars and rocket propelled grenades, recently occasional close quarter fighting has taken place as either side tests the defences of the other.
