On the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, in the disko bay many icebergs drift into the fjord and gradually melt into the ocean. These icebergs come from Jakobshavn Glacier Glacier (Sermeq Kujalleq in Greenlandic) listed as World Heritage Site since 2004. The glacier is one of the largest iceberg in the northern hemisphere suppliers. . This results in an annual production of 20 billion tonnes of icebergs (which represents the amount of fresh water used annually in France). NEWS - Bedrohte Gletscher auf Grönland
Aerial photo of supra-glacial lakes and meltwater rivers located on the Greenland ice cap, about 80 kilometers east of Kangerlussuaq. On the surface of the Greenland ice sheet is many lakes from melting showing turquoise waters.Scientists believe a previously overlooked side-effect of global warming - the formation of lakes on top of glaciers - could greatly increase the rate of melting of the vast Greenland ice sheet. Melting ice from the coast of Greenland could make a much bigger contribution to rising sea levels than was first thought. NEWS - Bedrohte Gletscher auf Grönland
Aerial photo of the end of Ilulissat Icefjord,
Located on the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, Greenland’s Ilulissat Icefjord is the sea mouth of Jakobshavn Glacier (Sermeq Kujalleq in Greenlandic), the largest outlet glacier in West Greenland ice cap reaching the sea. This site is listed as World Heritage Site since 2004. Jakobshavn Glacier is one of the fastest (19 m per day) and most active glaciers in the world. It annually calves over 35 km3 of ice (10% of the production of all Greenland calf ice) and more than any other glacier outside Antarctica.
Studied for over 250 years, it has helped to develop our understanding of climate change and ice cap glaciology. The combination of a huge ice-sheet and the dramatic sounds of a fast-moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord covered by icebergs makes for a dramatic and awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. The Eqi Glacier in west Greenland, which ends in the fiord 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat. It is possible by boat to get very close to the glacier and experience huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are enormous and the sight of the icebergs, crashing into the water, is breathtaking.
Eqip Sermia, an ocean-terminating glacier, shows lots calving of iceberg. In some cases, these calving events can cause tsunami waves, generally these tsunami are moderate, but in some case big events can occur, during the collapse of a 200m high ice cliff caused a tsunami wave of 50m heights. Rodebay (Oqaatsut in greenlandic means the cormorants) is a north west Greenland village with a direct view to icebergs in Disko Bay. It sits 21 km north of Ilulissat..This village was called Rodebay by the Dutch whalers back in the 18th century, who named the trading post probably after the colour of the sea in the bay after a whale was killed. Village life in Oqaatsut is about sustaining a small community that loves to be close to the sea. The few houses are scattered across a rocky terrain yet never very far from the harbor.
