Protests against ICE tactics
August 8, 2025 – New York, New York, United States: Volunteers and passerby gather around the Liberty City table initiative outside 26 Federal Plaza, where activists provide informational pamphlets and guidance on immigration rights. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) made at least 12 arrests on or near courthouse grounds since January 2025. Arrests by ICE during President Trump's second term topped 100,000 this week, as federal agents intensified efforts to detain unauthorized immigrants in courthouses, worksites and communities across the U.S. As o the first week of June 2025, ICE recorded more than 2,000 arrests each day, a dramatic increase from the daily average of 660 arrests reported by the agency during Mr. Trump's first 100 days in office. ICE has resorted to more aggressive — and controversial — tactics that have triggered outrage and even confrontations in some communities. Those efforts include arrests of migrants and asylum-seekers showing up to court hearings or check-in appointments that the government instructed them to attend. Immigration lawyers have strongly denounced those arrests, saying they deter migrants from complying with the legal process. Immigration roundups at some worksites have also been reported recently. REPORTAGE: AIDS in der mexikanischen Grenzsstadt Tijuana
From the book "Tomorrow Is A Long Time - Tijuana's Unchecked HIV/AIDS Epidemic"
October 7, 2013 - Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico: Susi Leal, an outreach worker for a research project into HIV and injecting drug use, reveals her contempt for a passing policeman in city's red light district as she tries to locate project participants who are due for blood tests. She holds a clipboard with their names and ID photos. Susi, who is HIV-positive herself, injected heroin for decades and lived in the Tijuana River Canal as a homeless person for eight years. She almost lost her right arm as a result of an infection from needles. Her personal history has given her a wide network of contacts among the city’s marginalized populations. While the United States has seen deaths from HIV/AIDS plummet over the past 20 years, across the border in Tijuana, infected people have continued to die at a fairly constant rate and the virus is still readily spreading among many high-risk populations such as people who in inject drugs, sex workers, men who have sex with men, and transgenders. Tijuana, like many resource-constrained locales worldwide with concentrated HIV/AIDS epidemics, has been slow to adopt the proven treatment and prevention strategies that have checked HIV in the United States, Europe, and Australia. This story profiles people at risk and the already infected, and shows why, in their situations, Tomorrow Is A Long Time. (Malcolm Linton/Polaris)
