    Celebrating Orthodox Easter in Greece
April 14, 2018 – Mystras, Lakonia, Peloponnesus, Southern Greece: Girl eats spaghetti that nuns serve during the Easter lunch with red eggs, in the beautiful Pantanassa Monastery, which is located in the Byzantine castle-town of Mystras. Mystras, like a miniature replica of the majestic Mount Taygetos, rises above the verdant valley of Eurotas. Historically, the medieval fortress town of Mystras gained prominence after the Fourth Crusade in 1204, when the Crusaders established the Latin Empire (1204-1261) and other states in the Byzantine lands they conquered. The Peloponnese region was occupied by the Frankish knights and became the Principality of Achaea under the Villehardouin family. William II of Villehardouin fortified Mystras and built the castle on the hilltop to subdue the unruly mountain dwellers of Taygetos and secure the defense of the fertile Lacedaemon. The castle had barely been completed when the Prince of Achaea, defeated by Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaeologus at the Battle of Pelagonia in 1259 and made prisoner, was forced to cede the three strongholds of Peloponnese, including Mystras, to the Byzantines as ransom. Mystras soon evolved into a major center of the Byzantine Empire, second only to the capital, Constantinople. It was here that Byzantine art and literature flourished for the last time before the spread of Ottoman conquests in the mid-15th century. This cultural flourishing, coupled with the revival of classical letters and philosophy, became known as the Palaeologan Renaissance. (Maro Kouri/Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

Air New Zealand has unveiled its designs for new economy bunk beds that will be bookable on flights from 2024.

The “Skynest” sleep pods are stacked three bunks high and will be available to economy and premium economy travellers, with a slim, hostel-style bunk, basic pillow and blanket behind a curtain.

The pods will be bathed in a “soothing pink light” to aid sleep. Rather than being traditional seats to book for the whole flight, economy travellers will reserve a pod for a four-hour slot as an add-on to an economy seat, to get a few hours’ kip during the journey.

They’ll be available on eight new Dreamliners due to be delivered to the carrier in 2024, as well as on a series of existing Boeing 787-9s which will be re-fitted with the new-style cabins.

It’s the first lie-flat bed to come to any economy class - though the airline has yet to reveal the price for what is sure to be a hot ticket, with just six on board each aircraft.

Described as “a game changer for economy travellers”, the bunk beds will join newly designed Business Premier and Business Premier Luxe seats - with a closing door and space for two to dine together - in the new cabins.

There will also be a new “Sky Pantry” for economy and premium travellers, where they can grab snacks, water and stretch their legs during night flights.

“We have zeroed in on sleep, comfort, and wellness because we know how important it is for our customers to arrive well-rested,” said Air New Zealand’s chief executive officer Greg Foran.

“We wanted to offer our Economy customers a lie-flat option and that’s how Skynest was born. It’s going to be a real game changer for the economy travel experience.”

The carrier said that sleep was a priority for customers on its ultra-long-haul flights (it’s set to launch a 17.5-hour route from Auckland to New York City in September, which will become the fourth longest commercial route

A petrol station in Emmer Green a suburb of Reading gets a fuel delivery first thing.

Three of the UK's biggest operators of petrol stations have warned of fuel shortages at some forecourts due to a shortage of drivers

Businesses called on ministers to relax visa rules for foreign workers.

BP said up to 100 of its forecourts were short of at least one grade of fuel, with several forced to close entirely.

Esso said that a handful of its petrol stations operated alongside Tesco Express stores were affected, and the supermarket chain's own sites are also suffering outages.

The government insisted there was "no shortage of fuel", but people still headed out this morning to fill up their vehicles.
