A wearable sensor could vastly improve treatment and drug safety for millions of patients with bipolar disorder simply through sweat levels.
The medication lithium is a highly effective treatment for bipolar disorder.
But too high a dose can be toxic to patients, causing kidney damage, thyroid damage or even death, while too low a dose renders the treatment ineffective.
The dose required varies between individuals based on body weight, diet and other physiological factors.
Lithium levels in the blood need constant monitoring currently done by lab investigations of blood samples
The wearable includes a skin-safe system to induce sweat without requiring physical exertion.
In just minutes, the device collects data, which is transmitted directly to a smartphone app, allowing patients to track their lithium levels from the comfort of their own homes.
It uses organic electrochemical transistors which are electronic devices that respond to atoms or molecules in liquid, converting them into readable electronic data.
A team at the USA’s University of Southern California created one of these devices using a novel material formulation tailored to detect lithium specifically.

This keeps the fabric dry and clean.The team behind the garment . called The Hope, say it is near impossible to get dirty.It also repels body-odour by beading sweat in the inside meaning it requires washing less often.It is made from polyester but coated with a proprietary nano-material called Freshtech.The hoodie repels sweat, stains, dirt, and most liquids including wine as well as fine solids. The idea was to keep it looking brand new. The Hope hoodie comes with a social accessory too. It was developed by UK based Varun Bhanot and Anisha Seth for their Unhoused company,.For each hoodie sold, a second will be donated free of charge to people living rough in the streets to provide secure and warm clothing. The hoodie comes with the word Hope printed on it, as a symbol of solidarity with the underprivileged.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will also meet different members of the High Commission team who work in a range of sectors supporting the partnership between Canada and the UK. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex last visited Canada House on Commonwealth Day in March 2019 where they met and spoke with young Canadians from a wide range of sectors including fashion, the arts, and business and academia, about their experiences as expats as well as opportunities for young people working in the Commonwealth.
