Sweat patch measures bipolar drug levels to avoid overdose

Bipolar 1
Ref 17020

See Ferrari text
Picture MUST credit: Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, Khan Lab, USC Viterbi School of Engineering
A wearable sensor could vastly improve treatment and drug safety for millions of patients with bipolar disorder simply through sweat levels.
The medication lithium is a highly effective treatment for bipolar disorder.
But too high a dose can be toxic to patients, causing kidney damage, thyroid damage or even death, while too low a dose renders the treatment ineffective.
The dose required varies between individuals based on body weight, diet and other physiological factors.
Lithium levels in the blood need constant monitoring currently done by lab investigations of blood samples
The wearable includes a skin-safe system to induce sweat without requiring physical exertion.
In just minutes, the device collects data, which is transmitted directly to a smartphone app, allowing patients to track their lithium levels from the comfort of their own homes.
It uses organic electrochemical transistors which are electronic devices that respond to atoms or molecules in liquid, converting them into readable electronic data.
A team at the USA’s University of Southern California created one of these devices using a novel material formulation tailored to detect lithium specifically.

Un patch pour surveiller la pression sanguine
Picture MUST credit: David Baillot / UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering A wearable ultrasound patch for continuous blood pressure monitoring has been developed. The patch is a soft and stretchy sticky backed device, about the size of a postage stamp, that is worn on the forearm. The team behind it says it offers precise, real-time readings of blood pressure deep within the body. The patch is made of a silicone elastomer that houses an array of small transducers sandwiched between stretchable copper electrodes. The transducers transmit and receive ultrasound waves that track changes in the diameter of blood vessels, which are then converted into blood pressure values. The technology has the potential to improve the quality of cardiovascular health monitoring in the clinic and at home. The device has undergone rigorous and comprehensive clinical validation on over 100 patients. In tests, the device produced comparable results to a blood pressure cuff and another clinical device called an arterial line, which is a sensor inserted into an artery to continuously monitor blood pressure. While the arterial line is the gold standard for blood pressure measurement in intensive care units and operating rooms, it is highly invasive, limits patient mobility, and can cause pain or discomfort. The patch provides a simpler and more reliable alternative, as shown in validation tests conducted on patients undergoing arterial line procedures in cardiac catheterisation laboratories and intensive care units. It was developed by a team of US researchers at the University of California San Diego. Picture supplied by JLPPA
