OUT OF THE DUST - LIFE IN AFGHANISTAN
A powerful collection of images of everyday life in Afghanistan will be displayed for the first time in the UK in a new exhibition this summer.
'Out of the Dust - Life in Afghanistan' features images by Dutch photographer Hans Stakelbeek. The exhibition runs from 30 July-31 August 2008 at PM Gallery in west London.
In 2007 Hans Stakelbeek was commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to document the reconstruction of Afghanistan during the efforts to restore peace and stability to the country.
Stakelbeek made four trips last year, shooting in Kabul and Uruzgan, as well as other remote areas.
As the project developed, he also became interested in capturing the stories of the people he came to know, as well as the reconstruction efforts required by his official posting.
'Out of the Dust' presents a set of images that pays tribute to the determination of the Afghan people to survive and live as normally as possible through the upheaval - building homes, going to school and working and playing in testing and frightening times.
The collection gives a rare view of daily life in Afghanistan without a military slant and each photograph comes complete with Stakelbeek's own written commentary, which reveals the stories within.
The exhibition is an up-to-date presentation of current life and an opportunity to see how the country is changing, how the reconstruction is progressing and to witness the perseverance of ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.

USA NYC Transit Strike
Commuters crowd their way in to Penn Station, standing on extremely long lines on the 3rd day of an MTA Transit Strike in New York, NY. on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005. Despite the end of the strike, many New Yorkers were still forced to find alternative ways to get to and from work because the subways and public bus lines in New York and the five boroughs had not reopened from a strike of the Transit Workers Union (TWU). The strike was due to various contractual disagreements between the MTA and the TWU. (FOTO: DUKAS/WORLDPICTURENEWS)

Inuit summer huting camp at the mouth of the sepentine river near Shishmaref a tiny island between alaska and siberia in the ChBritainchi sea is home to around 600 inuits or eskimos. As hunter gatherers their carbon footprint is tiny and as such are least responsible for global warming. Yet they are suffering greatly as a result. Their problem is twofold as temperatures rise the sea ice that used to protect thier island home forming around late september is now not forming until late december. this leaves them vulnerable to autumn and early winter storms that are eroding their island and washing it into the sea. Already 10 houses have been washed into the sea and more have had to be moved back from the edge. They are looking at having to relocate their whole comunity to the mainland but the government is refusing to pay for the relocation. Secondly the animals that they rely on for food are moving further north as temperatures warm making them harder to find and hunt threatening their ancient culture and identity.

Final Photo Of Amy Winehouse?
In what's believed to be one of the last pictures of Amy Winehouse before her tragic death on Saturday the 'Back to Black' singer poses with 16-year-old Hannah Hardman.
The intimate snap was taken at an after party following a performance by Amy's goddaughter Dionne Bromfield at the Roundhouse in Camden.
During the gig Amy surprised fans by joining Dionne on stage as she sang her hit song Mama Said.
According to Hannah, who describes herself as a big Amy Winehouse fan, Dionne seemed keen for Amy to join in the song.
However, instead Amy chose to dance her way through the track and was 'clapping and cheering for Dionne and seemed really happy'.
Following the performance Hannah and her friend, who had backstage passes, attended the after party.
Hearing that Amy had arrived the pair discovered her sitting with Dionne and a large group of friends and asked her for a photo.
Amy at first seemed confused but was 'really sweet' and more than happy to oblige.
She then wrapped her arm round Hannah's neck and posed for the camera in front of a large window at the venue.
And when Hannah told her what a big fan she was Amy thanked her for her support.
According to Hannah one of the things that struck her most about the star, who she had never met before, was just how tiny the super skinny singer was, especially her waist.
