Kosovo Ten Years After the War
Luan, 6 years old, is chopping wood with his grandfather Deli Hasani Shala, in Loxha, Kosovo, 1999. The village of Loxha once had 800 inhabitants, who had resisted two earlier attacks. One morning in August 1988 the Serbs struck for the third time with attack jets and helicopters, with bombs falling from the sky and 460 grenades exploding all around. This flourishing little village was soon completely destroyed. Many fell victim to the violence, while others fled to Albania and Macedonia. When the war finally ended in June 1999, refugees returned to find a heap of ruins. An elderly woman walked around in the grass on her own back yard, making sure there were no booby traps left, "it was better I died rather than any of my children", she said. The Red Cross has built 275 new houses. Gradually life is getting back to normal, and Loxha is once again becoming a place for people to settle down in. **Sweden Out** (FOTO: DUKAS/WORLDPICTURENEWS)

LAZY DAY IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

It's not all ferocious fighting and clawing your way to the top of the food chain in the animal kingdom - even the wildest of beasts need to take a break sometimes.

Wildlife photographer Andy Rouse may have captured some exciting images in his time but this cute collection of dozing creatures is guaranteed to raise a smile.

Andy snapped these sleepy animals on some of his many nature expeditions around the world - capturing drowsy moments in Africa, Alaska, Antarctica, Falkland Islands, Canada, India, America and the UK.

The result is a heart-melting menagerie of bears on their backs, cheetahs curling up for a doze, gorillas taking five, penguins pausing for a rest, snoozing seals, tired tigers, and lions (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

Richard Austin's 2010 'Animal Magic' calendar, Britain - Nov 2009
    A YEAR OF 'ANIMAL MAGIC'

A new calendar full of animal magic captures a host of cute creatures throughout the year.

Photographer Richard Austin is known as one of the best in the business at snapping unique animal images.

And he's gathered together just of a few of these for his 2010 'Animal Magic' Calendar.

This features a host of feathered, furred and hoofed animals braving the elements or making the most of the season.

In chilly January a pair of newborn lambs venture out in the snow wearing customised red plastic coats to keep them warm.

As the month of romance, February sees two mute swans creating the shape of a heart with their necks.

In March Lo the lamb gets a spring in her step as she explores some newly bloomed daffodils.

Eddie the Eagle Owl gives us all a wink in April, while a baby gosling peers out from amongst the garden flowers in May.

Lucy the Kune Kune pig sleeps in June after gorging herself on too many fermenting apples.

In July a rather menacing swan faces the camera full on, while a month on Bjorn the kitten takes it easy in a striped deckchair.

In September a harvest mouse nibbles on some tasty blackberries and a duckling takes a snooze amongst the falling leaves in October.

Meanwhile, a feisty zebra foal dashes through a stream in November.

As the year draws to a close a robin perches on a Christmas log in a picture perfect winter scene for December.

Oz the snow monkey learns to swim, Central Park Zoo, New York, America - 02 May 2010
SNOW MONKEY OZ MAKES A SPLASH

Ever since he was born 11 months ago Oz the snow monkey has made a real splash at Central Park Zoo in New York.

And today was no different as the youngster was taught how to swim by mum Hannah and the rest of the family.

However, little Oz wasn't too sure of the wet stuff to begin with and needed a little gentle persuasion from mum to join in the watery fun.

The youngster appeared less than impressed when mum Hannah first slipped off the branch they were sitting on and into the water.

Apparently not willing to take the plunge, Oz didn't seem too keen to join her - even when she tugged gently on his arm.

But after some persuasion, and like any cautious youngster, Oz descended into the water using a handy log - slowly and carefully submerging one part of his body at a time.

Eventually, fully submerged with just his head showing above water, Oz screwed up his courage and let go of the log he was clinging to.

With the worst part over and done with, the happy youngster then spent some time monkey paddling around the pool.

In fact, as his confidence grew the mischievous youngster even started jumping in and out of the water, apparently seeing just how big a splash he could make.

Once the fun and games were over it was then time to stretch out on a nearby rock to dry off in the sun.

The brave youngster also got a congratulatory cuddle from mum and a tasty treat for his efforts.

Snow monkeys are no strangers to water as, in their natural habitat in the mountains of Japan, they survive the harsh winter temperatures by bathing in naturally occurring volcanic hot springs.

Fish Face Bird Struggles With Huge Catch
A greedy bird looks like it has a fish for a face as it struggles to swallow its giant prey.

The African darter caught more than he had bargained for as he dived into a lake.

He splashed around for ten minutes before emerging with a huge tilapia, which he had to smash against the branch he was sitting on before he could eat it.

Field guide Richard Millar, 20, watched in amazement as the bird juggled with the fish to get it into a position where he could swallow it whole.

Richard, who had been in his hide at Kruger national park, South Africa, for three days, said he has seen darters throw away fish half the size because they could not handle them.

He said: "The African darter had been sitting in the same spot the entire time I was in the hide. He occasionally went hunting but was unsuccessful.

"The last morning I could see that the bird was getting very hungry.

"It plunged into the water and was shooting around after fish for about ten minutes when eventually it caught a tilapia.

"I have never seen a darter catch a fish this size in my life.

"I had seen darters catch fish half the size and throw them away because they couldn't swallow, so I expected the same with this one.

"But it was very determined to get this one down. He did really struggle though.

"When the darter caught the fish he had to hit it against its perch to kill it. This took about 20 hits before this huge fish actually died."

He added: "The darter then played around with the fish until he got it in the perfect position to swallow.

"It took about two minutes for the fish to go down. Then it had a drink of water to make it go down a bit easier.

"It jumped back up to its perch, opened its wings to get dry and sat there for the rest of the day.

Three-day-old-ducklings at Pennywell Farm, Devon, Britain - 25 Apr 2011
When it comes to family photos there's always one who has to misbehave. They may only be three days old but it's already clear who out of this brood of seven ducklings is going to cause the most trouble. When the fluffy youngsters were all lined up for a family portrait at Pennywell Farm in Devon one of them just simply refused to co-operate. While his cute siblings happily faced the camera the rebellious youngster turned his back. To make matters worse he then managed to fall from his perch, almost causing the whole brood to take a tumble. According to farmer Chris Murray, 60, this was the ducklings' first outing after being hatched. He comments: "It was so funny as they were all facing the same way staring at the camera out of curiosity, apart from one who sat with his back to it, before deciding to stand up and make all the others tumble off like dominos".

    Peekaboo I See You
These flirtatious red squirrels proved more than happy to have their photo taken - but only after a little playtime.

The bushy tailed and bright eyed creatures were snapped scampering around Brownsea Island in Dorset by photographer Dave Stevenson.

And to begin with the mischievous squirrels made him work hard for his photographs - popping up from behind leaves, around tree trunks and on top of branches.

Pausing for a moment they would then turn tail and disappear.

Such innocent scenes could soon be a thing of the past if recent research suggesting that some of Britain's best loved native species are facing an 'extinction crisis' is correct.

According to Doctor Toni Bunnell in less than two decades hedgehogs, squirrels and others will no longer be 'viable' species.

She made the discovery while carrying out a study for natural history TV channel Eden in which she measured recent populations and species' rate of decline.

Her report warns that red squirrels may have vanished from the UK 20 years from now.

As well as being at risk from habitat loss, red squirrels are also threatened by the spread of their non-native grey cousin.

Brownsea Island is the largest of eight islands that lie in Poole Harbour in Dorset.

It is one of the few places in southern England where red squirrels survive, largely because grey squirrels have never been introduced there.

Gorilla And Duckling Become Best Of Friends
This huge gorilla and tiny duckling became unlikely friends after the bird escaped into the ape's zoo enclosure.

Visitors to the zoo were stunned when the baby duck suddenly appeared inches from the primate.

Fearing the 90kg western lowland gorilla might react badly to the feathered visitor, onlookers held their breath to see what would happen.

But rather than give the duckling a hard time, the 4 and a half foot gorilla became fascinated with the bird and inspected its new friend with a nearby stick.

The 15-year-old female ape, called Fran, happily let it waddle about before the duckling was removed by zookeepers.

Although gorillas are frequently portrayed as aggressive, dangerous killers, they are shy, peaceful vegetarians.

Photographer Tom Warren, 51, captured the intimate scenes and said: "I went to the zoo and quickly became aware of a commotion in the gorilla exhibit, as many of the school children were yelling 'ducky, ducky!'

"We all watched with amazement as the little duckling wandered around the exhibit, while the gorillas either backed away from it or inspected it with curiosity.

"Then I spotted the duckling on the log next to a seemingly, amused gorilla.

"The duckling did not seem the least bit intimidated and for good reason, as Africa's gentle giants eat mostly fruits and plants.

"How fortunate I was to witness a wonderful moment between two unlikely friends.

"I held my breath and was able to fire off a few frames, knowing that the moment that I was witnessing was a very special one".

Tom added: "I was relieved when I got home and that the scene was in focus despite the fact that the photograph was taken through a thick piece of plexiglass".

Red-Eyed Tree Frog holds onto fungi so it doesn't slip off the wooden log
Is This Romantic Frog A Handsome Prince...
A handsome prince in disguise? This tree frog looks as if it is bearing a flower as a gift.

The hilarious scene was captured by wildlife photographer Megan Lorenz in the rainforests of Sarapiqui, Costa Rica.

She explains: "I've always loved frogs and was thrilled when I saw this Red-Eyed Tree Frog on such an interesting perch.

"It was on a bit of an angle and as the frog went to move off the wood, he grabbed onto the fungi so he wouldn't slip off.

"When I looked at the image later I was ecstatic, it looked as if it was presenting me with a beautiful red bloom.

"I was so happy to find that the focus was perfect and I'd been able to capture such a special moment."

Two men log in an ETECSA wi-fi hotspot in Parque Fe del Valle in Havana de Cuba, on the evening of 29 December 2015. In order to connect to the Internet through wi-fi spots, a card at the cost of $2 per hour is needed. The price is prohibitive for most Cubans that do not have access to the convertible pesos, the currency used by tourist and foreigners

A photographer has captured a series of striking images of Cuba's Wi-Fi 'Revolution'.

Photographer Valerio Berdini captured a series of images that show Cuban faces illuminated by mobile phone light, as many browse the internet on their mobile phone devices for the first time.

In June 2015 Cuban citizens gained access to Wi-Fi for the first time when Cuban government-owned telecommunication company, ETECSA, began installing 35 Wi-Fi hotspots in the parks of the main cities.

Until that date the web in Cuba was an affair limited to the guests of few luxury hotels and some official state offices.
