REPORTAGE - 'Victoria' in City of Westminster in London
23 October 2016. Spotlight Victoria. Victoria is a small district in the City of Westminster in central London, named after Victoria Street and Victoria Station and therefore, indirectly, after Queen Victoria. Victoria consists predominantly of commercial property and private and social housing, with retail uses along the main streets. The area contains one of the busiest transport interchanges in London and the United Kingdom, including the listed railway station and the underground station, as well as Terminus Place, which is a major hub for bus and taxi services. Victoria Coach Station, 900 yards (800 metres) southwest of the railway station, provides road-coach services to long-distance UK and continental destinations. Cardinal Place, across the street from Westminster Cathedral, opened in 2006 and contains a selection of restaurants, banks and shops, including a Marks and Spencer store. Street scene, Victoria Street.

Major protest ride, Monday 20th August. A junction blocking protest was held at the junction of High Holborn, Southampton Row and Kingsway junction.
Following the death of Dr Peter Fisher, 67, on the morning of Wednesday 15th August, 2018, London Cycling Campaign members and supporters held a protest at the junction to highlight the danger of London’s most lethal junctions, and the lack of progress fixing them by the Mayor, TfL and many boroughs.
The immediate area around this junction has seen four fatal collisions with those cycling in the last five years (and seven serious injuries to those cycling), plus numerous collisions with pedestrians (including a fatal one). The latest collision was when Dr Fisher was killed while cycling, by a lorry just west of this junction.

The new road rage: bitter rows break out over UK’s low-traffic neighbourhoods. As barriers and signs go up to stop rat runs and promote cycling and walking, communities are deeply divided over the benefits
The new road rage: bitter rows break out over UK’s low-traffic neighbourhoods. More than 200 new schemes have been proposed across the UK, with restrictions on through traffic planned or implemented in at least 54 local authorities including Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh. The vast bulk of the schemes are in the capital, with London accounting for 141 of the neighbourhoods where rat runs have been, or could soon be, partially blocked by barriers.Plans to rebuild a greener Hackney with low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) have left some car users feeling ignored and residents concerned over the redistribution of pollution rather than the elimination of it.
