March 15, 1944, Operation Dickens, the 3rd Battle of Cassino, began, with a carpet bombing and contemporary artillery fire, to complete the destruction of the city, with the aim of wiping out all the German defenders and paving the way New Zealand troops. About 1,250 tons of high-explosive bombs are dropped on Cassino and the immediate vicinity, an area of about 400 x 1,400 meters, The ratio of ordnance to defenders in the city is about four tons for each German paratrooper, The raid lasts three and a half hours.
