With fisheries in Ghanaian waters collapsing, wetland and coastal communities in the southeast of Ghana harvest mangrove wood to sell for firewood. This mangrove forest degradation has led to a loss of biodiversity in the region. Mangroves protect shorelines from storms and floods, prevent erosion, and provide essential habitats for thousands of species. As a blue carbon ecosystem, mangroves also sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their biomass and sediment. Harvesting these incredibly important ecosystems could release significant greenhouse gas emissions.

Brazilian model Tales Cotta dies on the catwalk during Sao Paulo Fashion Week - 28 Apr 2019
Soares was parading designs for fashion brand Ocksa when he is reported to have tripped on his shoelace and fallen. Footage showed him approaching the end of the catwalk where he appeared to stagger and fall face-first to the floor. Some observers originally thought it was part of an act but he was seen foaming at the mouth and medics rushed onto the stage to tend to him. He was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The cause of death is unknown at this stage. A statement issued by the organisers of Sao Paulo Fashion Week read: "SPFW has just received the news of the death of model Tales Soares, who suddenly took ill during the Ocksa show." Tales Soares is pictured here in the last photo he posted just over a day ago on his "open" Instagram page before his death.

November 16, 2018 - number of Palestinian protesters are injured during clashes with the Israeli army on the east of Gaza City on 16 November 2018. Thousands of Palestinians had gathered in five locations along the Gaza Border this Friday for the weekly Great March of Return protest, with few of them approaching the border fence and hurling stones at Israeli troops on the other side of the border. Dozens of Palestinian demonstrators were injured by rubber and live bullets and tear gas, and Palestinian journalist Ibrahim al-Madhoun was injured in his face by a rubber bullet. Since March 2018 thousands of Gaza demonstrators have gathered every Friday along the border with Israel in protest against the Israeli siege on Gaza and in support of the right of Palestinian refugees to return to the land lost around the founding of Israel in 1948. This week Great March of Return has taken place while an Egyptian brokered ceasefire is in place between Israel and Gaza following a recent major escalation of violence between the two (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)

*full story: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/f8q9* A 17-year-old girl who has eaten little else but chicken nuggets for the past 15 years had to be rushed to hospital after collapsing. Stacey Irvine has lived on a diet of nuggets and the occasional portion of chips since she was a toddler. Claiming to have never tasted fresh fruit or vegetables, the consequences of her chicken nugget addiction became clear recently when she had to be taken to hospital. The teen was forced to seek treatment after collapsing with difficulties breathing. Doctors discovered she was suffering from anaemia and that the veins in her tongue were inflamed. In addition, her body was so deficient in certain vitamins and nutrients that she had to be injected with them. Stacey has now been urged to drastically change her diet before she does herself irreparable harm, but is finding it difficult to combat her addiction.

New Delhi building collapses killing at least 64 and around 80 people
16th November 2010, Lalita Park, Laxmi Nagar, New Delhi, India: rescue workers clear rubble from the collapsed 5 story building in efforts to find any trapped survivors still living.

The death toll in the east Delhi building collapse today mounted to 64 as scores of rescue workers struggled to pull out those trapped in the debris of one of the worst such incidents in the capital.

At least 80 people were also injured when the 15-year-old building, where an illegal fifth floor was under construction, came crashing down around 8.15 PM yesterday at Lalita Park in Laxmi Nagar. Families of around 10 migrant labourers were believed to be staying in the building.

Police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the building owner Amrit Singh, who is absconding. A senior police official said the case has been registered against under section 304 of Indian Penal Code.

    The Second Downfall Of Pompeii
In AD79 the Roman town of Pompeii was buried under an avalanche of ash after Mt Vesuvius erupted.

For those who lived in the ancient town the disaster was upon them so suddenly that there was no way to escape.

Tens of thousands were killed as death reined down upon them and the town was swallowed up - preserved for thousands of years under 4-6 metres of ash and pumice.

Today, Pompeii and its sister site Herculaneum are once again facing a crisis as an apathetic attitude finishes the job that Vesuvius started - destroying Pompeii forever.

For the ancient site, which attracts around two million tourists each year, is once again being buried - this time under a mountain of bureaucracy and indifference.

Following their burial Pompeii and Herculaneum were largely forgotten about for the next 1,500 years until their accidental rediscovery around 1592.

However, it wasn't until the late 18th century that a systematic evacuation of the sites got underway.

Fast forward to 1997 and the two towns were officially recognised by Unesco, which described them as "a complete and vivid picture of society and daily life at a specific moment in the past that is without parallel anywhere in the world".

And at one time this was a fitting description for the archaeological site, which has fascinated visitors through the ages.

In 1925 archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri was put in charge of the two sites and until his departure in 1961 he set about recreating the two cities' heyday.

However, with Maiuri gone this drive disappeared and slowly but surely Pompeii and Herculaneum have been deteriorating thanks to natural forces and human activity (both accidental and deliberate) .

Even when Unesco made its glowing praise of the sites the rot had already very obviously set in.

    Since then th...

This dramatic piece of art will CRACK you up.

Artist Edgar Mueller has created a huge work of 3D street art call The Crevasse.

It took the German master of optical illusions five days to paint the giant fissure in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland.

He worked from sunrise to sunset to make the 250 square metre image which appears to show a fault in the earth's crust.

Created for the town's "Festival of World Culture" last year, Muller's jaw-dropping art involved clever planning so that when the picture is viewed from a certain angle it looks totally three-dimensional.

And locals wasted no time having fun with the work by pretending to teeter precariously on the edge of the deep hole.

Edgar explains: "3D street painting itself is a very new artform which only a handful of people do worldwide. Its nature is to trick people's eyes and show them a new 'reality'.

"The technique itself is called anamorphism and has been known since the Middle Ages. It was used by famous painters like Michelangelo, da Vinci and others in their murals."

Edgar's previous works include sharks jumping out of pavements, raging waterfalls on city roads and a German street collapsing into a lava pool.
