A set of household account books from Gad’s Hill Place begins in April 1866 in Dickens’s hand but is completed shortly after his death by his sister-in-law and housekeeper, Georgina Hogarth, with the touching words: ‘So ends the dear Gad’s Hill Housekeeping August 1 1870.

On left: Among the original drawings are watercolours of scenes from Oliver Twist by illustrator and caricaturist George Cruikshank, who created all 24 illustrations for the novel. Among these is Cruikshank’s final illustration for Oliver Twist, ‘Fagin in the Condemned Cell’.
