Facing each other across the Iraq-Syria border, the towns of Al-Yarubiyah, Syria, and Rabia, Iraq, were taken by Islamic State insurgents in August 2014. Since then The town of Al-Yarubiyah and parts of Rabia have been re-taken by fighters from the Syrian Kurdish YPG. At present the situation in the towns is static, but with large exchanges of sniper and heavy machine gun fire as well as mortars and rocket propelled grenades, recently occasional close quarter fighting has taken place as either side tests the defences of the other.

A Seabird Snack Proves a Rocky Proposition For Polar Bear
This daring polar bear was feeling peckish - but it was a rocky proposition trying to grab a seabird for her breakfast.
Wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein captured the extraordinary efforts of a hungry polar bear hoping to grab guillemots and kittiwakes from the side of a cliff.
The Exodus Travels guide documented the scene as he led a tour in Spitsbergen, Norway in July. He believes that poor sea ice may have driven the predator to swim ashore to find food.
Paul, from Wimbledon, explains: "I have spent a lot of time with polar bears but never have I seen anything like this, it was extraordinary.
"At some stage this bear will have lost any sort of residence on the very sketchy sea ice this year and then swum to these bird cliffs.
"This is prime avian real estate with over 100,000 guillemots and kittiwakes. The bear would need dozens of birds or eggs for it to be worth it.
"These were perilous climbs up vertiginous basalt cliffs, each time she stepped out our hearts were in our mouths.
"Her return on energy invested was absurd, she only managed ti pick up a fledgling when we got there, but for 80 people in Zodiac boats it was remarkable, a wildlife extended moment from the 'high' table.
"We had been out at 5am that morning and had great bird photography along the cliffs, but I insisted on taking another excursion after breakfast and while we were watching an arctic fox and birds we spotted the three year old bear.
"Just incredible, eventually she got tired out and we went back but it is perhaps my most extraordinary wildlife moments to date."

It looks like this orangutan needs to go on a New Year's diet.
Louise Bleakly, 69, snapped the portly primate as she lazed by a tree after over-indulging.
The sedentary creature soaked up the midday sun at Taman Safari Park near Jakarta, Indonesia - and was too lazy to even swing on the trees and ropes.
Louise, a retired social worker, said: "These orangutans were all in a special enclosure which was a wide-open, lush, green area.
"There were about 20 orangutans and they were going about their daily lives, which looked much like ours on occasion.
"It was around noon time at the park and it was rather hot.
"There was an area where the orangutans could swing in the trees but I only saw one using the rope.
"The orangutans in question seem to lead a sedentary way of life.
"The really plump ones look like females.
"There were male orangutans in the enclosure and they were all of normal weight and more animated."
Louise, from California, United States, added: "Later in my trip, I observed orangutans in the wild in Borneo in a conservation area.
"It seemed to me that the orangutans in captivity used more human-like gestures."

CHINESE TEEN STABBED THROUGH HEAD
A Chinese teenager has been stabbed through the head with a large knife after getting into an argument about a computer game.
Amazingly, Xiao Wei, 16, of Mishazi town, northeast China's Jilin province, managed to walk to hospital after the incident, with the 14cm knife still sticking out of his skull.
The large cleaver pierced Wei's entire head - entering through his left temple and protruding 1cm out from the other side.
"His face was covered in blood, but he was still conscious," said Professor Yan Shijun, deputy director of neurosurgery department of the hospital.

The couple, who have been together for ten years, were sure lightning couldn't strike twice - until 27 year old Alison found out she was expecting twins again. Now the pair, from Fleet, Hampshire, are celebrating again after Alison gave birth to twins Miya and Leah.
