Mothers Vigil Marks 31st Anniversary Of Ocak Disappearance
March 21, 2026, Istanbul, Turkey: Protesters gather during the 1095th weekly vigil of the Saturday Mothers (Cumartesi Anneleri) marking the 31st anniversary of the enforced disappearance of Hasan Ocak. The demonstration is held without Emine Ocak, one of the founding figures of the movement, who passed away without seeing justice for her son. Participants commemorate victims of enforced disappearances and call for accountability, truth, and justice. Hasan Ocak, a 30-year-old teacher, was detained in Istanbul in March 1995 and later found dead with signs of torture in an unmarked grave at Altinsehir Cemetery. Despite official denials at the time, witness testimonies and forensic evidence pointed to his detention. The European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2004 that Turkey failed to conduct an effective investigation into the case. However, the case was later closed due to statute of limitations. The Saturday Mothers continue their decades-long peaceful protests, demanding justice for forcibly disappeared relatives and an end to impunity in Turkey. Since their capture, there were efforts by the Israeli government and activists to secure their release. Shaul's body was recovered from the Gaza Strip by Israeli forces in 2025, and Goldin's body was returned by Hamas on November 9th, 2025 as part of the Gaza peace plan. On August 1st, 2014, Hamas captured Hadar Goldin, 23, near Rafah. He is believed to have died before his body was taken away by Hamas.
