Israel-Hamas War 2025: Anti Government Protest In Jerusalem
July 1, 2025, Jerusalem, Israel: Demonstrators outside the Prime Minister's office call for an immediate hostage deal to save the remaining 50 Israelis held in Gaza for 634 days. Frustration mounts as the government cabinet meets with an agenda protestors deem trifle and irrelevant, amid continued casualties among Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip. The ongoing conflict began with the October 7, 2023 attacks that saw 1,400 Israeli civilians massacred and 240 abducted. (Credit Image: © Nir Alon/ZUMA Press Wire (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)

A plan to produce green energy deep underground is being developed — using caverns known as salt caves. These are geological formations, typically formed by the dissolution of salt deposits by water which leave behind a void. There are thousands around the world with the longest being over 10km. Israeli firm Augwind Energy has developed a long-duration energy storage system called AirBattery. It  relies on cold compressed air held in the salt caverns to release energy using electricity generating turbines when the wind does not  blow for wind farms or the sun does not shine for solar panels.
Augwind says the caves can reliably store energy for weeks while requiring a relatively small land footprint.

OPS: Render of how an AirBattery facility would look above ground with the salt cave below serving as storage for compressed air..
